We recently connected with Byron Washington and have shared our conversation below.
Byron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I hope my legacy will end up that I gave my passion to the community in which I live. I want to set up a community that my kids and grandkids and future. Great grandkids inherit something beyond my wildest imagination. I want people to know that you can be successful thriving and satisfied, working in living and contributing to the community that you grew up in that really needs you as a person.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I got into my industry by looking around and seeing so many small business owners, and entrepreneurs, not having avenues to really showcase their businesses. Disallow me to think of small open markets in the heart of Scotlandville. It was to bring attention to a community ,a historic black community. so we merged business social gathering, economic development, community, pride and future growth into one concept that anyone from the community the public private industry and political spaces can all hold hands in and contribute.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When the lessons that I had to unlearn is that you can’t get too, caught up in the highs and lows. When I have my markets they were sometimes where it was maybe 57 people max and then sometimes it was hundreds of people. And what I learned is that instead of worrying about those book ends being consistent each and every time we come out that people can expect that we will be there and they can expect the quality of work that we’re going to put in and put out that is Paramount.
Any advice for managing a team?
My advice would be to always check in on their personal lives. To treat everyone as a teammate that we earn this together, and to lead by example . This means the hardest working person on the team that does most of the labor should be the leader, because if the leader shows the example , no one else on the team has any excuse as to why they are not stepping up
