We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kalvin Weathersby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kalvin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Embarking on my journey in the construction industry at the age of 20, I quickly became adept in the field with guidance from my father. While mastering the intricacies of construction, my curiosity expanded to the business side of the industry. To pave my entrepreneurial path, I diligently studied and obtained a contractor’s license on a strict budget, sustaining myself on a simple diet for a year to save funds.
During this period, I strategically purchased tools on eBay while working for someone else. Accumulating $40,000, I was on the verge of launching my business when my employer offered me a lucrative deal, compelling me to postpone my entrepreneurial venture for another two years. Grateful for the additional experience, I eventually started my own contracting business at 26, armed with valuable insights gained from my previous employer.
Despite my initial uncertainty, their mentorship proved invaluable. They not only supported my business launch but also provided subcontracting opportunities, assisting with the acquisition of a truck and offering a consistent flow of work. This collaborative journey shaped my understanding of business dynamics and laid a strong foundation for the success of my enterprise.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Starting at 20 and now with 24 years of experience, my commitment and passion shine through the telecommunications construction industry. We build infrastructure for major cell phone carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and Tmobile also constructing car charging stations for industry leaders like Tesla and Electrify America. The emphasis on loyalty, integrity, and a commitment to delivering on promises sets my business apart, creating a team that mirrors my values. Growth, reliability, and a commitment to quality in the telecommunications and construction landscape has been what I think my secret sauce to success.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
In the pursuit of growth, I sold my construction business to a company, envisioning a nationwide expansion. Unfortunately, the optimism turned into a setback as the company faced bankruptcy. This unexpected turn compelled me to repurchase my tools and trucks, embarking on the journey to start a new company.
The experience taught me a valuable lesson: the importance of involving my own lawyers from the outset. Had I done so, the outcome might have been more favorable. It underscores the significance of legal guidance in business transactions, ensuring a smoother and more secure path for future endeavors.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’ve always prided myself on getting the work done quickly, safely, and efficiently in the construction industry. My dedication has made my name known, and whenever someone in the industry needs assistance, they say, “Call Kalvin. He’ll get you figured out.” Upholding my commitment and maintaining integrity has given me a strong foothold, presenting opportunities for leadership roles, prestigious projects, and potential ventures within the construction sector.
