We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joy Dushey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
About 10 years ago I experienced an awakening just as I began meditating with TM; transcendental meditation. At this time in my life,I felt a sudden strong sense of purpose and clarity. One night I woke in the middle of the night with an idea ;A DIY on line holistic and spiritual coaching platform. I saw this visually and vividly. I created it and designed it over the next few weeks and took it to a web builder based in Los Angeles that had it executed in a few months. It was comprised of articles and interviews with other holistic and spiritual experts. I felt a great sense of purpose creating and curating these articles and engagement with my audience.
Simultaneously, as I was in California building my website/ (on line platform for healing), i discovered a modality for healing that changed my life. It is coined “Breathwork” yet its a particular form of breathing using a 3 part breath through the mouth.
I found that Breathwork healed much grief and pain that I didnt know was holding me back so I knew I needed to bring it into my practice. I became certified in Breathwork facilitation and opened this practice in NYC several months later
Through this active form of meditation, we somatically move stagnant and stored energy and traumas that were held in the body even from the primal years and undo non-wanted repeated patterns, traumatic behaviors, and programs. I facilitate the client’s journey out of the conscious mind. Breathwork is a three-part, open-mouth breathing meditation that helps us bypass our conscious mind and move all the non-serving energy stored in the body. The mouth breathing comes first from the lower chakras (energy centers) and then from the upper chest/heart, and finally exhaling through the mouth in a circular continuous pattern. It can be intense, and most people have unusual experiences, such as tingling sensations, vibrating energy, clawed hands, spasms, levitation, floating, and other wild visceral experiences.
In the most basic sense, the mystery of Breathwork is interpreted as rapid and deep breathing that leads to a release of more carbon dioxide from the body than is usual. This causes the blood to become more alkaline and retain more oxygen. The mystical explanation is that we are able to access heightened states of consciousness where we meet the spiritual realms.
Once the active part of the meditation is done, I provide clients with a restoring sound bath that has crystal bowls, Tibetan bowls, and a gong, and any other instruments needed for a melting experience of rest. These vibrations and frequencies with crystal instruments allow for healing and harmonizing the physiological body and nervous system.
Often in these sessions I also suggest resources stemming from The Joyful Life System. These include daily practices, affirmations, self -are for accessing self-love, authentic living, establishing core values, and guidance with setting boundaries and intentions.
My hopes are for the client to follow the practices for sustainable results. Regardless of a client’s goals, all clients are encouraged to practice these techniques daily to really live with vitality.
It’s also important for clients to recognize that this is not a one-size-fits-all methodology. I want to be able to help each of my clients find their own path and design their own system that is unique to each and every one of them and to help guide them towards their most desired life.
That can be achieved through working with people individually, to assess their individual needs. It can also be done through workshops or online courses, retreats, intensives, nature immersions, and other creative offerings that come to me intuitively and help me to best support the community. My mission is to be able to guide people through the process, in whatever way they find is most comfortable.
I believe that the universe alignment was what led to all of this. I sat in the waiting room of my very own Breathwork facilitators studio and I said to myself “I would love to have a place like this one day when I feel ready to start my practice.” A month later Erin sent out an email saying she was leaving NY and asked for any healers looking to take over her lease. I felt it was premature for me take that on yet an accupuncturist reached out to Erin and said she was looking for someone to split the rent with someone. My husband agreed that it was a great time to start and thats how it all began! I believe magic followed me steadfastly with some bumps here and there yet what unfolded in the next years felt nothing short of miraculous.
Joy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a NYC based intuitive energy healer, spiritual guide, transformative coach, breathwork faciliator, podcast host and mentor. I’m a mom of two grown daughters and grandmother to three grandchildren. I got into the industry of holistic and spiritual healing in the esoteric field as I experienced great healing and transformation in my own personal life. I felt a deep calling from my soul to share everything I possibly could to help others awaken to. I suffered with illness grief and emotional pain in my earlier life and after healing from a stroke and the traumatic devastating loss of my brother, I felt a great sense of purpose sharing and offering the powerful modalities for others to heal with. I help people that feel lower emotions of sadness, grief, anxiety, stressed nervous system and feel lost from their life purpose and perhaps disconnected. We unravel limiting beliefs, blocks, traumas and lower dimensions to heal and uplevel and course correct into alignment. I also help empower and coach women that are high achievers looking to uplevel and manifest their dream life in multi arenas of their life. I mentor women that are looking to launch a soul driven mission entrepeneurship. I mentor and certify women looking to facilitate Breathwork alchemy. My brand, The Joyful Approach is an integrative life system. It is comprised of a two tier system that brings us into alignment.
The two tiered life system stems first from areas that can have an immediate impact on your life: sleep, hydration, nutrition, breathing, thinking, and movement and then outer layers in the second tier which have to do with self-love, authenticity, boundary-setting, motivating intentions, core values, and daily practice. These are the deeper layers of your emotional life that help support your long-term experience of joy, freedom, and love. There is a plethora of tools and lessons within the methodology of the life system.
I am most proud of the mentorships that I facilitated. I feel like a proud mama witnessing the healing I’ve been able to pass down to my mentees. I take much time with devotion and dedication and intention to make sure I share the integrity and necessary authenticity in training others like a beautiful golden chain of healers teaching healers.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is a muscle that I’ve cultivated from such a deep place; my soul. When I traveled back and forth extensively to California from NYC, for my Breathwork and energy healing trainings, my daughter’s were both still at home in their adolescent years. I struggled with leaving them and my husband as often as I did. I had anxious emotions and guilt yet I had such a strong soulful calling that this work would impact many people. Looking back, I see how much strength and courage I mustered up without the certainty of the impact yet there was a deep knowing that I had to do this for a greater reason. Something way bigger than me.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
My journey that led to creating what I did went against everything I was conditioned with and taught from the beginning of my life. The culture of Syrian Jewish women that I was born and raised to were mostly homemakers back then and were not encouraged to pursue career nor introduced to the esoteric healing arts. Holistic healing, was foreign to me and anything of the sorts would be threatening as “new age/ weird” It wasn’t until later that an aunt of mine introduced me to Yoga and the new age movement that I felt drawn to. She was a pioneer to me taking coursed at The New school and furthering her own curiosities. I loved being around her and absorbing anything I could that felt refreshing in the world outside the insular world I came from.
By the time I had my spiritual awakening one year after recovering from an Ischemic Stroke, I knew there was no stopping me. I had medical Dr’s that were treating me and I felt so depressed and mistreated. When I embarked on holistic healing, the methodology of Paul Chek, it felt like I was given a whole new lease on my life. It made complete sense to me that my emotions had so much to do with how I was feeling physically. This felt like infectious information I NEEDED to share with the world.
