We were lucky to catch up with Nisa Rasul recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Preparing them for themselves. When we enter the real world there’s so many learning opportunities as far as learning ourselves and where we want to be. The education system focuses on a lot that in a reality don’t have anything to do with us. We should have options.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a licensed Esthetician from Philadelphia, PA. I started my skincare journey in my bedroom, experimenting with product. Throughout my life, people have always complimented my skin and asked for tips to help with their skin so one day I decided to make my own products. After doing necessary research I decided to go to school to further my education in the skin care field. I graduated March of 2018 from Jean Madeline Aveda Institute and obtained my license in August of 2019. After working a bit in the field and realizing how catty the industry could be, I decided to work alone. In November of 2019 I opened my very first Beauty Studio while working alongside other business owners. August of 2020, I moved into a larger suite with still working alongside other business owners, including my mom and best friends. September of 2023, my mom and I moved into a storefront location where we are now. This journey has been tricky, I am learning to take a lot of time to myself especially being as though my job is to literally cater to others. The beauty industry has been growing throughout the years and I love to see it. I hope it grants all of us the same opportunities of growth and well being. Self care is very important and should be on everyone’s to do list. When you look good, you feel good. Take care of yourself, mentally as well! I am most proud of my ability to help others. I always have but now in ways that I didn’t know I had. My most popular service provided is the Brazilian Wax, where all hair in the private area is removed. It takes me about 5-10 minutes to complete and my clients love that. I love to see their faces and hearing how they feel after receiving services. I absolutely love what I do. To be able to make people look and feel good is such a blessing.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn myself. Throughout life my main thing has been learning myself. I am very intrigued by my history, where and what I came from. How did I get to being who I am today and in order to do that, I had to take a step back from my reality and really get to know myself. It was tricky and learning a lot of things had actually hurt me, still learning some things to this day even bothers me. It’s tricky, but I am learning to love and forgive. Not only myself, but the people who made me, me.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
January 12, 2021, I was shot twice, once in my neck and then again in the chest, by my uncle. That was a very difficult situation being as though I was already going through a lot regarding business and friends. To be shot by my uncle, sent my mind through loops. I had just picked myself back up and had to start back over. I suffered a shattered jaw and my mouth had to be wired shut due to that. My chest wound healed within a weeks timing but the hospital still wanted to keep me for another week. As fast as I left, I was right back. I had a trachea in my throat to help me breathe but there was so much mucus coming from it, it eventually blocked my breathing. Once that was figured out, a nurse was sent to care for me, she was very very helpful to me and my mother. My mom and family were there with me every step of the way and I do appreciate them for that.
