We recently connected with Shea James and have shared our conversation below.
Shea, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a small business owner, it’s always important to understand what sets you apart from either another small business owner or larger company that’s in your field. Having this knowledge can help you land more clients and help you push what really makes your business successful. So when I reflect and compare my services that I offer to my clients as a social media marketer and content creator vs what other large marketing agencies are providing I always think of how my services are much more customizable and unique to my client’s business style and mission.
I offer custom social media management packages that cater to each of my clients individual needs. For example, some of them heavily rely on me to create and schedule out their monthly content and others utilize me for outreach and engagement services with little content creation. Either way I offer these custom services in order to meet my clients needs so that they can focus on other aspects of their business.
When I was doing research and creating my service package options for my business I noticed that these larger marketing companies were offering basic services like scheduling a few posts a month but requiring that you create the content yourself and share it with them. I also saw that they were offering ads management but the captions were so corporate and bland. Their content was not matching the client’s business style at all. I was just shocked by this and couldn’t believe business owners were trusting these companies with their social media accounts.
As a social media marketer and business owner, I understand that establishing a consistent online presence is key to thriving on social media and creating a real connection with potential leads through UGC (user generated content). That is why I offer custom content creation and photography/videography sessions to get high quality content for you as well as turn it into monthly content posts on social media.
I firmly believe that every small business owner should hire either a freelance social media manager or business owner if they don’t have the time to do it themselves. These large marketing agencies over charge their clients and provide very basic services compared to the services I offer.

Shea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Shea James, I live in the north Austin area with my boyfriend, Ryan and rottweiler, Axel. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Midwestern State University with an emphasis in photography. I started my business as a photographer and social media marketer shortly after I graduated college and I have been pursing my passion for 2+ years now. My goal is to use my knowledge, skills, and creativity to bring customized marketing and content creation services to local small business owners that need help promoting themselves on social media.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I definitely have to give props to my family, friends, and the amazing people I have connected with through networking. Most of my networking interactions have been through social media, specifically on Facebook groups and instagram. I have had lots of success reaching my target audience through social media and word of mouth. Once I landed a couple of my first clients, they all started telling their friends about me and it just spread from there. Another way that I have kept up with my reputation is posting on local Facebook groups and having my friends and family share/comment and recommend me to other local business owners. This process has really helped boost my business and I’m so thankful for the people that support me!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly, the most rewarding aspect of being a successful creative business owner is that I get to do what I love doing every single day – creating content, taking photos, going to events, and networking with other amazing people! I love what I do and everyday I get rewarded with being happy and satisfied that I’m helping other business owners achieve their goals with my creative ideas and designs.
