We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Creative Contour By Carla. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Creative Contour below.
Creative Contour By Carla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Yes, absolutely there is! I feel that there are a few things I do differently than the makeup artistry industry standard, but the biggest one I do is: be real with my clients. In the beauty world there’s a lot of information constantly in circulation, and not all of it is necessarily true or can apply to everyone, regardless of what influencers say. As a working makeup artist, I’m here to help each client understand what will really work for them in their everyday life. Each person is different, and has different needs. This was my biggest lesson working on the job, so I apply it to every aspect of my business. By creating a customized approach to each makeup experience, I can be the realest with each customer, in order to guarantee a successful makeup appointment.

Creative Contour, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey beauties, I’m Carla, Owner and Founder of Creative Contour By Carla, LLC.! Makeup Artist here! I am based in Boston, MA, but offer makeup artistry all over, whether you sit in my chair, or I show you how to apply your own makeup look. At Creative Contour By Carla, LLC., it is my mission to strive to help you love makeup again. I’ve found over the years that the online world and social media have really destroyed beauty standards and have made us all believe that makeup is this hard, really scary thing to do. I’m here to remind everyone reading this article that makeup should not be hard or scary. That’s where I come in as a makeup artist. Together, we will collaborate to help you love makeup again, in whatever way that is!
I feel that this mentality truly separates me from other makeup artists in the industry, period. You need someone who is going to help you feel comfortable wearing makeup in your own skin. Social media dictates that we all need this or need to do that. The reality is, we all are busy and do not have time to do all the things they tell us to do or buy. We need to find the makeup routines and looks that work best for our individual needs. I’m proud to discuss this mentality with each and every person who sees me on social media. This is a necessary mindset that we all need to have when it comes to wearing makeup.
A little background on me and how I got into this field: it all started at a young age when my mother would buy me children’s makeup kits as birthday and christmas gifts. And yes, I would wear those makeup colors proudly as a child. It was fostering a love for this field, and I didn’t understand it until much later. Once I got to high school, I was following and reading about makeup artists such as Bobbi Brown and Kevyn Aucoin; industry greats. Reading their books and learning about how their careers came about really inspired me to consider and pursue the field of makeup artistry. By my 21st birthday in 2013, I was a licensed esthetician and a graduate of The Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics, in Medford, MA. Not long after licensure, I found a makeup artist who took me under her wing as an assistant. I worked assisting and also other jobs to sustain myself financially at the time. It wasn’t until I attended The Makeup Show NYC in 2017 that I had the inspiration to start my company. Four short months later, Creative Contour By Carla was born.
The past 7 years have certainly had its challenges, as owning a business does. But there is nothing I would change, because I learned a lot in that time. I learned how people view themselves, how they view makeup, how they view hiring a makeup artist. There are so many things and viewpoints to consider when running a business, for sure!
And now, in 2024, I see my business sustaining certain levels of growth that were once a dream to me. I am forever grateful for that. I am also applying the building blocks that will sustain this company for many years to come. I want to be able to look back on my life and be proud of my accomplishments. I want all of my loved ones and supporters to proudly share and celebrate with me when they see me. I want all of my customers to feel valued, heard, and supported.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Such a great question! Reflecting back on my 7 years in business, I would say that there were a few things that helps me build and maintain my reputation in my market: listening, supporting, and my style of taking no fuss in business. This combination has really helped my customers align with me!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I absolutely love being a makeup artist. There is nothing else I want to do. I love helping people love makeup as much as I do! I love seeing how confident people are when I hand them the mirror before they leave my chair; or when I hand them their makeup chart at the end of class. It’s so much fun, and so rewarding!
