We were lucky to catch up with Jingyue Huang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jingyue, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
One of the key lessons I’ve learned from the past that has stuck with me is the saying “Do the job you love and do the best you can do. Don’t chase the money as it will come naturally to you.” That made a huge impact on me as it always motivated me to create the best design for each client, all while keeping myself humble because I wanted to connect with each of my clients and create a meaningful design for them instead of seeing them as just ‘a way to bring in income.’
I also often listen to a church service podcast that is based in Taiwan. One of the most important things I have learned from listening to this podcast was regarding the topic of our dreams. Instead of just having an individual dream, it’s better to have a shared dream! As individuals, we cannot force people to help us achieve our dreams, but we can find a way to serve people that helps bring us closer to making our dreams come true. When I was just starting off in my career as an artist, I was using skin canvases to create my portfolio and build up my artwork, but in my 5th year of being an artist, I’ve learned to use my skills and services to help my clients with their dreams and design the pieces they’ve had in mind come true or to fruition!

Jingyue, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Before becoming a tattoo artist, I was an art student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China and also attended Zurich University of Arts where I studied style and design. Before coming to the US, I worked as a part time art teacher during my summer and winter breaks of college! I originally came to the United States to attend graduate school in arts and designs, but before I started going to school, I learned how to tattoo as a hobby. After posting some of my work on social media, some of my posts suddenly went viral and because of that outcome, I decided to become a full time tattoo artist. I currently own a private tattoo studio located in the Arts District of Los Angeles. My clients book with me for my detailed and elegant fine line designs as well as for my watercolor tattoos. Besides tattooing, I’m also very proud of myself for just not creating work on people’s skin, but I also paint regularly. I do traditional Chinese paintings on paper and silk and by doing so weekly, it brings more artistic and creative works into my tattooing skills, and it also inspires me to further elevate my skills.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My personal goal that drives me on my creative journey is to be brave enough to use the talent that I have and share with the world, and also live a full life with the people I love.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are two books from Eckhart Tolle that made a huge impact on my life. The titles are: ‘The Power of Now’ and ‘A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.’ Also reading the Bible has helped impact the way I think and my personal philosophy. With all three of these books, they have taught me a lot of things such as life wisdom and wisdom beyond the material world.
