We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jameia Lesha a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jameia , thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were starting over, one thing I would do to get to where I am faster would be, to take myself more seriously. I come from a family of hairstylists so doing hair is something I grew up knowing how to do. I began doing hair when I was 10 years old. Being that I have always done hair and started so young I didn’t look at it as a career and the last thing I thought was that I would become a self-employed hairstylist. I simply looked at it as something that came second nature to me, and it was just a hobby back then. Over the years I began to notice how good I was and how doing hair was what gave me the means to take care of my daughters. I was young and making what was money to me back then, I had no complaints. Until I began to get older, and the prices and hours weren’t adding up, and doing hair became my full-time job. Yes “Job”. I was so busy doing hair just for friends and family I was hardly charging, and I had no set schedule to the point that I started to feel overworked. Had I taken myself seriously back then and made a schedule with a detailed price list, had better time management, etc. I would have been where I am in my early 20s. Over the years I have learned that everything counts. People will only take you as seriously as you take yourself. These days I take myself and my business seriously.
Jameia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I initially got into the hair industry by default. By default, I mean I grew up in the industry. My grandmother and two of my aunts owned their beauty salon and my mom was an at-home braider. I feel that growing up around hairstylists who all specialized in different things and my desire to make people feel good about themselves is what set me apart from others in my industry. Now with the yoga industry, I developed a desire to know who I am and what my purpose for just being is. I began to meditate often which led me to go to a yoga class in my city (Columbus GA). Once I completed my first class I was hooked and knew it would be something I was going to add to my life. Now that I knew that I wanted to serve people. I had to begin adjusting my life and becoming more disciplined. Now I put myself in a position to not only beautify and uplift my community, but I could also help them change their life by becoming more at peace and helping to spread knowledge about how yoga can improve mental, physical, and spiritual health.
I am proud of the changes I chose to make in life that have allowed doors and windows to open for me.
For me, our divine health is the most important thing we can achieve. I am here to help spread knowledge behind the chair and on the mat about mental health.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been staying consistent in posting content. years ago, the way to build clientele was word of mouth. Today, I still receive clients by word of mouth but today staying active on social media has been the key. When you are active you stay on your client’s mind. Staying on their minds means an active flow.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to learn was, you don’t have to work hard to get what you’re worth. I remember working long nights trying to get in as many clients as I could, thinking it was going to earn me more money. Little did I know that wasn’t going to work. I had to change my mentality. Now I know that if you make yourself more valuable, you can charge your worth and you won’t need to overwork yourself.
