We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Lamb. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I’ve always been interested in health and wellbeing and there is a long lineage of women in my family right back to my granny Barbara who was the first women professor of heath sciences at Otago University, New Zealand back in the 1950s. I studied Physical Education and Physiology at the same university and lept out into the world as a personal trainer all those years ago ready to amplify people’s health through what I’d learnt. I’d also been a high performance athlete representing NZ in my teens and was disciplined in experience in setting goals and achieving them, but all with an external focus on pleasing others and meeting outside expectations. My new career was no exception in what was a highly competitive and fiercely judgemental space in the late 1990’s that cemented the path away from my own self – my needs, wishes, morals even. What came in the next 2 decades slowly and painfully amidst what may have appeared a ‘normal’ life on the surface was a complete disconnection from myself, until I landed broken and lost in the depths of hard core alcohol addiction. My rock bottom. This story is not unique or even that interesting really! It is the human condition and how we adapt to survive. But how we find our way back is unique and inspiring. For me that was Breathwork and in particular a defining mind blowing moment of awakening in Kauai in 2016. As I took breath after conscious breath over this 2 hour journey everything I had been holding – all the shame, the fear of not being enough, the grief, that uneasy feeling I’d had all my life of not knowing why I was here or what this all about….. fell away. It released in wave after wave of energy and then the most incredible sense of peace. It happened in a literal moment. I came home to myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a mother of 3 girls, wife, sober women and guide for others and New Zealand’s first Alchemy of Breath Practitioner. I went hunting for Breathwork training somehow divinely guided to train online just before the global pandemic hit the world. In 2019 I began teaching and then completed a mentorship to graduate at Practitioner level registered with the GBPA. with my Bachelor Physical Ed background and life long love affair with holistic health I was keen to explore fully the physiology of the breath and all aspects – the art, the science and the magic.
I now am one of NZs busiest Breathworkers! I have a thriving Breathwork practice offering private sessions and corporate wellness days as well as facilitating retreats and workshops at some of the best studios in Auckland where I’m based. I love to travel and my favourite part of the job is creating beautiful spaces for people to retreat to. Reconnect with themselves through the breath out in the stunning nature we have here. What sets me apart is that I offer everything from guidance in functional breathing and reclaiming your full breath in day to day life to the full healing experience of a transformational Breathwork Journey.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I believe much of our journey to wholeness and health is about unlearning and adapting to new environments. Our family and school systems are set up on a performance and reward basis. I became very adept and highly awarded but this ‘success’ left me very ill equipped for the inevitable times of struggle. Facing adversity and finding our own way, problem solving, creative thinking and becoming more intrinsically motivated is essential.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Becoming sought after for my skill as aBreathworker has been the most organic and natural growth I’ve ever experienced in my many roles and businesses.- (I’ve owned and run 3 other small business before I founded Breathe Free). Much of my background after leaving the fitness industry was in brand and marketing and in many ways the age old adage is true in building a brand and presence – do what you say you do and do it very well. I am solely focussed on Breathwork, am busy in my field, share my events regularly online and in return I get repeat customers, word of mouth referrals and the most incredible organic SEO that I couldn’t afford to pay for even if I tried!
