We recently connected with Noah Lopata and have shared our conversation below.
Noah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
One of the unexpected problems I faced and solved in my business was getting visitors to my website and then turning them into actual leads and then customers.
When I first started doing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) years ago I was under the impression that all you had to do to get customers was build a website. I wasn’t aware that, as the old saying goes, if you build it they won’t necessarily just come.
After building my first website (it was horrible, I’ll be honest) I was shocked and dismayed that nobody actually found it and visited the website. I was honestly stumped. It was only after a lot of trial and error and research that I learned that you had to get your website to show up at the top of the first page of Google to actually attract any clicks and visitors.
Fast forward about a year of diligently working on my website, content, backlinks and more and I actually started getting some traffic.
Imagine my shock and dismay when even though I got visitors and they were reading what I put on my website, they still weren’t calling or emailing me. I honestly could not figure out why. The reason was I didn’t have my website set up properly to entice the visitor into making that phone call or sending that email. I talked a lot about myself, didn’t present the information they were looking for, didn’t give them the right Call To Action (CTA) buttons, and had my only contact form buried on the contact page of my website which nobody ever found.
Once I started studying and understanding Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and the steps I needed to take to fix my website in order to get those calls and leads it was like the clouds parted and the sun came out. It all made so much sense. Once I stated fixing those things slowly but surely I started getting those calls and emails and even converted some of them into my first few customers. I felt so relieved, excited, and optimistic about the future of my business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My career as an SEO came from actually being a small retail business owner and needing to get customers in the door.
I had a small shop, only 500 square feet, and operating expenses that required me to make $125 a day. The trouble was I was making around $70 a day and that was not going to cut it.
One of my first successful advertising attempts was posting ads on Craigslist. This actually started to work and I saw more and more customers coming into the shop. I had put a special offer on Craigslist that I didn’t offer in the store so I was able to tell which customers were coming in from those ads.
This was a pivotal moment for me to realize that people were finding me online and actually coming into my shop and buying things.
From there I built a website and in time I was seeing a large, steady stream of customers from the internet. After that I started doing the same thing for a family member, then some friends, then a few customers from my store came on as clients. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this could really become a serious business, and it eventually did.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Didn’t start with any funding or capital at all, just a laptop, internet access, and dedication of my time.
