We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Beth Boyer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarah Beth thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission through Bold and Brave is to create an inclusive drink culture at events and weddings. To also create a luxury experience, but within a reasonable budget. We want everyone who comes to our coffee bar to feel loved and cared for. At every event and wedding our goal is to make every guest part of our family. To create a culture at every event that is welcoming and fun without the side effects of alcohol. We want there to be an option for everyone. Both of us coming from families where alcoholism is prevalent we are passionate about creating a fun drink culture that everyone can enjoy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Andy and I helped start a coffee shop in Temple, TX and loved every moment of it. It’s where we learned to work as a team, served so many people and really grew in our love of a good well made cup of coffee. Andy even proposed to me (Sarah Beth) there! Coffee became a big part of us. We moved to Oklahoma to be closer to family and decided that we still wanted to be in the coffee business. At our wedding we had wanted to serve lattes for all of our guests, but this service was not available anywhere. We played around with the idea for a couple of years and then one day decided to just do it!
We were not expecting much and were going to be super happy if we got just two events in the first year. We went through barista training at Topeca (Tulsa, OK) again and relearned things, got equipment built our cart and started advertising.
Some days it’s hard, it’s always hard when it’s a sales job, but you persevere and find a way to put yourself out there and find more clients. Coffee bars are a new thing and just starting to gain momentum. We are super excited for the future of it. Bold and Brave kind of symbolizes how we were pumping ourselves up to feel in the beginning, a little phrase to remind us that we are “Bold and Brave” and we can do this with the strength of a lion. (Our logo symbol) We want to empower all those around us to take on this same phrase for what they are going through in life.
We love providing a mobile coffee shop with lots of options and flavors of lattes along with chai and hot chocolate at events and meeting people and all the connections we make.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
Yes, we sold out our part of ownership in the last coffee shop that we part owned. The biggest lesson that we learned through this experience is to get advice from trusted people and use logic, not feelings. When you have poured your heart and soul into something, sometimes you need someone from an outside perspective to clarify some of your doubts. If it’s time to move on, do it and leave on good terms and do your best and your part to communicate well through the whole process.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth and social media. I feel like we are still learning how to navigate social media and it seems really scary, but really, just post it. Putting yourself out there everyday is hard, but it is key to finding new clients and just connecting with your customers and followers. We are so grateful for them all.
Also resilience, when we first started this we lived in an upstairs apartment and carried everything down the flight of stairs, across the apartment yard and loaded it all in the van. After both working our jobs, sometimes that was the last thing we wanted to do and felt like we were able to do, but we fought through it and now live in our home and have a MUCH easier time loading and unloading everythung.
