Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to G Bliz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi G Bliz, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I’ve had this thought many times, especially since I’ve never really had a 9-5. I got into music young and always had a passion for it. Later I found ways to add value to the music world and learned ways to monetize it. But what people with 9-5’s don’t always realize is the frequency (or lack thereof) of your “paycheck” when you’re a small business owner/sole prop. I’ve had months where I earned enough money to live all year, and I’ve had months where I didn’t make a dime. Those are usually the months where I’m wishing I had a steady paycheck, haha. What I’ve extracted from experiencing this so much is how key setting up multiple streams of income is. Diversifying where your value goes. If you can start the process early, you can set yourself up better for the rocky times. For me that’s happened in forms of selling instrumentals, writing songs for others, releasing my own music, being a studio musician, executive producer, selling digital products and merch online etc. Happens over time for sure!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started off as a guitarist, but quickly realized I wanted to create music, not just play other people’s. I would attribute breaking into the music industry as a record producer to two main things, treating everyone with respect, whether it be the janitor or the CEO, and putting yourself out there on display to showcase what you can do. For me that was making videos on vine and instagram. I started adding guitar solos to songs that didn’t have them, and that got me in the studio with people, or at least got their attention. Through genuine relationships built out of respect, I was able to create music for/with a number of artists, from Pitbull to Rod Wave to Mary J. Blige and a whole lot more. This ever-growing resume has enabled me to gain the trust of new artists, giving me the freedom to guide them when creating songs and finding their sound. I believe that’s a huge calling of mine, to bring out the best in the artist rather than force what I think is best for them. Love, respect, and being true to you are some of the pillars to my brand.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m in the middle of a pretty big pivot as we speak. For most of my career I was only on the service side of things, providing musical needs for artist clients. I recently feel called to step into the artist role myself, so I’ve been moving in that direction. It’s been fun yet challenging to put myself in the forefront, but I’m getting the hang of it. I think pivoting is very important because you want to stay passionate about what you’re doing, and you also can get a measurement of what works better for you. I might end up not loving the artist life and go back to solely producing and writing for others. I’m embracing the unknown.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Absolutely, and it’s something I learned later on. What I find is most effective is having the multiple streams still feed a common goal beyond just getting money. For me, I can sell a small piece of music called a “sample” to another producer to license. But I can also make a beat out of that sample, I can now license that beat. I can also write a song to that beat and potentially sell that to an artist, generating a monetary advance and back end royalties. I can also release that song myself instead and generate royalties that way. When my song is popular I can sell merch related to my song or brand. So it all ends up supporting your big goal instead of distracting you from it.
