We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenny Evans. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenny below.
Jenny, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
As an entrepreneur, taking risk is a huge part of the job description – whether it’s being on stage in front of 18,000 people, self-funding product launches, or expanding the business, I like to give myself the benefit of the doubt.
Which is not to say taking risks doesn’t scare me – it often does – but I’m driven by purpose. And my purpose of helping people go from feeling overworked, overwhelmed and overstressed to on fire, on purpose and on their game gives me the confidence and the courage to really put myself out there.
The biggest business risk I’ve taken lately happened during the pandemic. I pivoted from in-person speaking engagements to virtual events in less than a week! Thankfully my wife Tiffany used to dabble in photography and we had some lights, cameras and other gear in the garage.
Not long after, Tiffany was downsized from her job and she jumped in to figure out the tech aspects of the virtual world – even though she was a skin and hair scientist.
We had always dreamed of working together, but could never figure out how to blend our differing industries. But the Universe was giving us an opportunity…IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? And the worst thing that could happen was that my wife would have to find a job.
I’m happy to say this risk is one of the best things that’s ever happened to my business (and yes, we’re still married and love working together). Revenue has grown, marketing has grown, the quality of what we create increased exponentially and we’ve realized the fears we had were totally unfounded.
The risks were definitely worth it and it’s made us trust ourselves as individuals and as a unit even more.
Now if we were just traveling as much as we thought we’d have time for….
Jenny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When people ask me how I got to where I am it always makes me laugh out loud…I wish I could tell you I had a master plan! My life and business has always been a series of one decision or opportunity followed by another – mostly guided by my sense of purpose and what feels right.
My education is in exercise physiology, psychology and American Indian studies and my approach to helping people improve their resilience and performance is rooted in the fact that stress and burnout start out as chemistry and biology problems, not psychology problems. And it’s those chemical, physiological changes that go on to create the negative psychological side effects we all experience. So we have to first correct our chemistry, and then we can correct our psychology.
Through my speaking, training, executive coaching and online courses I equip employees, managers and leaders with a suite of Micro Strategies – from short Micro Bursts of movement to rid the body of stress hormones, to helping them get clear on their purpose through Micro Beliefs to name a few – that fit into a busy lifestyle and are infinitely actionable and effective.
The stress in our lives is never going to lessen. Our jobs, families and loved ones are never going to ask less of us. So it’s incredibly important to have strategies to improve our resilience and keep us from burning out. It IS possible to expand our capacity for stress and our ability to recover from it more quickly and effectively.
I love knowing I’m helping people lead more fulfilling, rewarding and resilient lives!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
As a speaker, the best way for people to experience me and my content is to see and hear me in action, so my team and I write, create, edit and produce at least 2 videos each month. They address a range of topics relating to resilience, purpose, confidence, dealing with change, burnout, and performance and each one is chock full of value: I love to give as much information and as many strategies as possible to help people on their journeys.
The videos are sent to my email list, posted on YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/powerhouseperform), as well as social media.
Not only are they serving my clients both personally and professionally, they’re a great way for people to get to know, trust and like me. I can’t tell you how many new clients on a discovery call say “I love your videos!”. They’re a great way for prospective clients to learn about what I do and how I can help solve their problems.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think 3 things have helped me build my reputation as a speaker, consultant and executive coach:
- The novelty of my messaging. Most often the conversation around stress is how to use cognitive techniques to manage it. The problem is that our stress starts as a chemistry problem, and these chemical changes cut off access to our advanced brains where cognitive strategies are located. So in times of stress, we’re not very logical – we’re reactive and emotional. My approach helps people to first return their chemistry to an ideal state, and then address things from a cognitive approach. It’s treating the root of the problem first, and then the side-effects.
2. It’s a stress-free and easy process to work with me. I do all the hard work and heavy lifting on my end and behind the scenes, so there’s very little my clients need to do…and I make them look good. I joke with my clients that it would defeat the purpose of bringing me in to work with your teams or audiences if the process caused them any stress!
3. My integrity and reliability. You can bet on me 100% of the time. When I say I’m going to do something, consider it done. No follow-up necessary, no checking in needed. I guarantee results and that I’ll be one of – if not the – top speakers or coaches you’ve ever had. At the end of the day, all we have is our names and our reputations, and I take mine very seriously.
