Alright, Gagan Preet Kaur thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’m Gagan Preet Kaur Virdi, an independent producer currently navigating the vibrant landscape of Los Angeles, originally hailing from the quaint town of Mailani in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The turning point in my career trajectory emerged after the completion of my engineering degree in 2010. Despite a brief stint in the software industry, my heart gravitated toward the enchanting world of film. Recognizing the need for a holistic understanding, I delved into the legal intricacies of the entertainment industry by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in law, which I successfully completed in 2016.
During this academic journey, I had the privilege of interning under a highly esteemed attorney with significant expertise in both theater and the film industry. This experience not only enriched my legal knowledge but also fueled my passion for storytelling and film production.
Growing up in the small town of Mailani presented its own set of challenges. Every step in my journey was met with obstacles that required tenacity and perseverance to overcome. However, driven by an unwavering determination, my aspirations extended beyond personal success. I aimed to create pathways for young women in my hometown, aspiring to be a source of inspiration and change.
Despite facing initial hurdles in the world of film production, my resilience remained unshaken. The challenges served as stepping stones, motivating me to consistently deliver content of exceptional quality. Fuelled by this determination, I decided to broaden my horizons by pursuing further education in the United States. This decision was not just an academic endeavor but a quest to gather diverse experiences and insights that would contribute to my growth in the industry.
My journey reflects a deep-rooted commitment to not only realizing personal aspirations but also making a meaningful impact in the world of film. I am excited about the ongoing adventure and the potential to contribute to the ever-evolving tapestry of storytelling.
Gagan Preet Kaur , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My standout accomplishment is the production of “Ajay Azad,” a feature film that not only resonated well with the Indian audience but also proved to be a financial success, generating nearly triple the production cost. Currently available on YouTube, the film has amassed over three million views, attesting to its popularity. In the United States, my focus has shifted towards submitting films to esteemed film festivals and exploring distribution avenues. Noteworthy productions in my portfolio include “Mistake,” “Galaxy Book,” “Jasmine Flowers,” and “House Call.” “Jasmine Flowers” has already begun its festival run, earning substantial appreciation among film festivals and establishing its presence as a noteworthy contender.
On my film sets, efficiency and precision are paramount. Punctuality is a non-negotiable element, ensuring that every aspect is completed within the specified timeframe. Detailed-oriented, I make it a priority that the entire team is well-informed about the schedule and adheres to it diligently. This meticulous approach extends to every facet of the production, guaranteeing a final product of the highest quality that surpasses audience expectations.
Importantly, my commitment to financial prudence is reflected in the fact that the true production cost of my projects does not exceed the budget. This financial discipline ensures the viability and success of each venture.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Early in my career, as I transitioned from engineering to law and eventually to film producing, I faced numerous challenges. The entertainment industry is known for its competitive nature, and breaking into it, especially as a woman from a small town in India, presented hurdles at every step.
One of the most defining moments was during the production of my first feature film, “Ajay Azad,” and subsequently “Jasmine Flowers.” While these films eventually became successes, the journeys to those points were rife with obstacles. From securing funding to assembling the right team and navigating the intricacies of film production, each phase brought its set of challenges.
Financial constraints were a significant hurdle. At times, it seemed like the budget wouldn’t stretch far enough to cover essential aspects of production. However, instead of succumbing to these challenges, I used them as catalysts for creativity and resourcefulness.
I remember instances where we had to improvise on set due to unexpected setbacks. Whether it was adjusting scenes on the fly or finding innovative solutions to production hiccups, it demanded quick thinking and adaptability. What could have been perceived as roadblocks became opportunities to showcase resilience and determination.
The path to success is rarely a linear one, and setbacks are inevitable. What sets us apart is how we respond to these challenges. Instead of being disheartened by the difficulties, I embraced them as integral parts of the journey. Every obstacle became a chance to learn, adapt, and grow.
The success of “Ajay Azad” and “Jasmine Flowers” wasn’t just about the final products; they were a testament to the resilience and perseverance that characterized every step of the production. They taught me that setbacks aren’t roadblocks but stepping stones, and each challenge is an opportunity for growth.
These experiences have become guiding forces in my career. They instilled in me the belief that resilience isn’t just about weathering storms but about thriving amidst them. It’s a quality that continues to shape my approach to filmmaking, infusing every project, including my latest endeavor “Frederick’s Long Tale,” with a spirit of determination and an unwavering commitment to telling compelling stories.
In essence, these stories reflect not just single instances of resilience but an enduring ethos that defines my journey in the film industry.
