We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keonia Saulsberry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keonia, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first thought about wanting to pursue my artistic path mid 2023, when I started taking my craft more seriously! I went through things as a young teen mom going into adult hood , I triumphed over a lot of difficult things in my life and I want to take wht I learned and possibly teach the youth from my past mistakes to prevent them from going through things they don’t have to. I also want to be the voice for them and a listening ear when they feel they don’t have anyone to talk to! I want them to know they’re not alone and that they won’t be in the same place forever! When life knocks you down get back up even if it takes a thousand try’s to win! It can be done
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So I started writing poetry years ago like 2009 processing my pain on paper as an outlet when I felt I didn’t have anyone to talk to! I stopped for years and I started back when becoming re- inspired by some artist I heard and I began to take it more seriously and glad some really dope artist poured into me and helping me! Jeronimo speaks , Eros bowie(prince of poetry)! I think wht sets me apart is my story and the way I’ve used it to make me a better person and I always try to be optimistic with everything! I want my fans to know I will always be true to my art, thats where my names comes from and use my platform to inspire and motive all tht needs it ! I provide motivational speaking and youth advocacy and mental health awareness!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would like to eventually start a youth group! I have an idea but not a definite answer as to what city, I will start in! I think back on the things I wasn’t taught and wht I didn’t learn as a teen/ young adult ! Tht I learned late on my own or from someone else and i would like to help assist in helping them learn essential life skills!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn raising my children bring certain things from my childhood into our lifestyle as times are different and things change all the time! Motherhood is one of the hardest things I have ever experienced not financially!
