We were lucky to catch up with Christy Maldonado recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage social media for myself and my clients. Delegating this important marketing task is a big responsibility for me and a big win for my clients. Along with goal setting, setting a marketing budget, email marketing, etc…, delegating the social media marketing allows my clients to: focus on their business, take daily tasks off their plate, consult with me as a marketing and business expert, and create a deduction as a marketing expense to offset income on their annual tax returns.
My clients and I have seen excellent results overall because our efforts have converted contacts into sales consistently.
Managing the data received from campaign, marketing calendar, and following through on the online sales leads have proven critical to conversion to sales and therefore return on my clients’ investment in my services.
I learned that delegation of business tasks to professionals as part of your team and certainly my team is a key to business success.
Christy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For 30+ years I have been focused on two markets, Legal and Social Media marketing for small businesses. Along the way I started to recognize the increasing confusion from professionals that I met with as they tried to grapple with the complex strategies, they were being told they needed. This was holding small business professionals and entrepreneurs back from taking action and diving into marketing themselves and their businesses online. The need for competent brand marketers who could help this demographic was great and it seemed that what these professionals needed the most was someone they could trust to be honest with them and to execute on a strategy.
Since I started my professional marketing journey, I’ve had the opportunity to really expand my skillset. Now my firm handles social media accounts, local advertising, website blogging, marketing compliance and legal issues, AI auditing and so much more. Today I’ve successfully integrated these services into a full offering for my clients with very positive results.
In 2023 I began speaking on stages throughout the country both virtual and in-person regarding the complexities of marketing and the law. This has led to even more opportunities to help businesses, especially as AI has come to the forefront.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During COVID lockdown many of my business colleagues lost their income and therefore their businesses. I pivoted myself in some very important ways:
1. I had multiple streams of income
2. My multiple streams of income came from clients in different industries
3. Many of my clients were and are in industries that were considered essential services so income did not cease
4. The year prior to COVID lockdown I streamlined my work processes and invested in software so that I could easily work from home and online, and
5. I invested in an online networking group which had daily meetings on Zoom
Because of all these things, my business not only survived but thrived once the lockdown was over
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve built my social media presence by:
1. Telling a story or narrative that people became invested in that was personal to me. People began following me, participating in posts, asking questions, celebrating in my victories and empathizing in my set backs. I began expanding my contacts and to this day am consistent with my audience many who are now friends
2. Being transparent and honest. People know when you’re sincere
3. Meeting social media contacts in real life and establishing that know, like and trust factor, and,
4. Supporting social media contacts in their business endeavors, personal celebrations and personal setbacks
