Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashely Biski. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ashely, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I play one of the lead characters in “The Nutty Boy” on Netflix, named “Juliet”. And she is this super fun, spunky, little girl with wild curly hair and brown skin. It was my first project as a voice actor where I got to voice a character that looks like me. A character where younger Ashely would be able to see herself on screen. Besides being in a show that is incredibly cute, fun, and diverse, it means so much more to voice a character where little brown babies can turn on a cartoon and say “Wow! She looks like me!”.
Ashely, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a San Diego and LA based actress with a passion for on-camera work, voiceover, and modeling. My roots are in musical theatre, which sparked my journey into the entertainment industry. I am most notably known as the voice of “Layla” in Genshin Impact, which won ‘Players Voice’ in the 2022 Game Awards. You can also hear me as the voice of “Juliet” in The Nutty Boy out now on Netflix. As well as the recently released character “Leona” in Nikke: Goddess of Victory. I have worked with countless developers like Bandai Namco, Mihoyo, Kuro Games, and Cygames. Along with companies like, Pokemon, BMW, Progressive, Puma, Ring, and Sony PlayStation, both on and off the camera.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Making people feel great! As actors we never really meet the people who consume the media we are in. So when I go to a convention and meet my fans and they tell me how much they relate to a character I voice, and how much they loved my performance, that means so much. Even if it was only one person telling me that, that means the world. We never know what anyone is going through and people use media a means of escape from the harsh realities of the world, so to know I made someone’s day a little brighter is the greatest win.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
So I never really thought about voice acting as a career path. I was a nerdy kid growing up. I played video games, watched anime and cartoons, so I always had an interest in it but it was at the back of my mind. So when the pandemic hit I was mainly an on camera actress. I am a huge believer in “Try everything. Because you never know, you may be good at all of it” and right before we went into lockdown I took a class for voice acting and realized that heck, I’m actually pretty good at this, and then boom, lockdown. I took that as my chance to dive head first into VO and use the time I had confined to my home to grow and learn. And I haven’t looked back since.
