We were lucky to catch up with Marc Rob recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marc, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I’ve been a designer for over 10 years and I’ve done designs for many companies in fashion and products and services. I’ve always had a passion for fashion as well so this year I’m releasing my fall/winter collection. I just recently sold quite a few pieces to a client before my initial release and the joy of making money off my visions and seeing others want to buy and appreciate the style gave me more motivation to keep going. When you are an independent artist it’s not a ton of glitz and glamour. A lot of the things that you want and vision are really in your head and it’s up to you to bring them to fruition. My daughters love my collection and seeing the joy that they have seeing me sort through fabrics and designs I see the fire burning inside of them to do everything I’m doing but better.
Marc, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Marc Rob. I’m from Flint, Michigan. I am an artist in every aspect. My approach is always rooted in an artistic expression. Art is my inspiration and my passion. I am a producer, writer, and designer. At a very young age I started in the industry behind the scenes in management and artist development. That was a heavy grind but I found myself attached to those who weren’t as driven or passionate about the art in itself. The thing about artists is they have moods and times where they want to work, can work, and have to work. And then there are times where an artist just isn’t in the mood to work and shouldn’t be forced to create without inspiration. In the process of working with other artists I learned more about myself as an artist and the world around me. I never had a passion to be in front, behind the scene positions last longer, less attention, less trouble but easily can be more lucrative if done properly. After a few years of behind the scene work I decided to move away from the industry and focus more on creating art that wasn’t intended to be commercialized. Just creating art for the sake of art. For the passion, for the love, for air to breathe. I engulfed myself in music, learning music theory, learning to read music by ear and learning to write records across all genres. I developed this craft by being a novice and starting from zero. I was able to learn drums, piano, horns, the different keys that would speak to me. My ultimate goal was to create a sound that would give me a feeling of zen, peace, tranquillity. Life has its ups and downs and mental health is a real thing. I found myself in my happiest, peaceful, most blissful state whenever I would create. So I deducted a large part of my life and time to mastering my craft.
Music and art became hobbies that I was passionate about but the idea of dealing with the industry and all of its tricks, games, smoke screens and deception just wasn’t appealing to me. But after a heavy battle with long covid in 2022 I decided once I was able to get healthy I would share my talents with the world. Before that I would just share with close friends, family and people that were into art. It was less pressure, it was more organic and I just wanted to share my sounds with music lovers.
And honestly after working so hard on something for so long it kinda takes away from an amazing piece of work to try and get attention in a “look at me” society/industry full of so many lackadaisical artists. Music and Art is just in a place where it isn’t crafted anymore its forced, its redundant, its microwavable.
In 2023 I released my first project commercially. “La Historia de Marcos” This album was more like a score to a movie that you can watch visually through the music. I managed to get my music in over 70 countries all organically.
My most proud accomplishment to date would be an impromptu performance in my hometown with a live band. What was supposed to be a 3 min rehearsal/meet and greet turned into a half hour of performing songs to live instrumentation. This was my first time doing such a thing and my first time sharing these songs in a performance format. But I felt no jitters, no anxiety, just all love. My next most proudest moment was my hometown radio that I grew up listening to featured my music for the month of June. That was such a nostalgic feeling.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I started this journey from a pure place of art and the love of it. Life through so many obstacles at me I never got the time to pursue music in all of its capacity. Now that I’m here and in the game It’s important to me to show those that are inspired to never give up. To define what success means to you and to pay no attention to those afraid to start something and finish it. It is so imperative to not get caught up in the viewpoint of others. Those closest to you or from afar. Stay locked in your goals and define what success looks and feels like to you.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m building my audience one at a time. Slowly but effective. Social media followers and likes don’t equate to success or sales. People are trained to see “likes”, “verified checks” and ” followers” to determine what Is successful to them but I see so many major artists struggle with sales due to the belief that their audience is there for anything other than the circus athey have been feeding and the art is always last. My strategy is a bit different because we aren’t in the same race. I see things from a different perspective. I want to create an intimate and meaningful relationship with my listeners. I want to take them on a journey and for those to see and feel my heart.
