We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alfred Price a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alfred, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Currently I am developing my short film, Leave Me Here, which is based on a very personal experience. The film is about a man who struggles to deal with the recent loss of a parent and decides to take his overbearing father on a road trip, where they learn to find peace with each other and within themselves. This is the most personal story I have ever written because it is based on my own experience with losing a parent and the difficult period of mourning that followed. The film deals with themes that many of us go through when losing a loved one, such as depression, addiction, regret, and anger. Because this film has been taken from the pages of my life, the development process of the script has been both a tremendously painful experience and a very cathartic one as well. I hope to secure funding for the project within the coming months and begin shooting within the next year. Along with writing and producing the film, I plan on directing as well.
Alfred, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Most people never get to express their creativity because they are never given the opportunity to find their artistic voice. I always knew that I not only had an artistic voice but also a true passion to be an artist. In my twenties, I became a floral and landscape designer and began to understand the elements of design, color, shape, and placement. While I loved creating botanical arrangements and urban gardens, after a few years, I began to feel that I wasn’t artistically fulfilled. I always had a strong passion for movies. I was always drawn to the process of making movies from an early age, and it was something that I always wanted to do with my life but never thought that it could be a possibility. So at the age of thirty, I enrolled in film school to achieve my goal of becoming a writer and director of film and television. My goal is to create stories that are based on my own life experiences and interests that are not only movies that I would want to watch but also something that audiences from all walks of life can relate to or just simply enjoy as entertainment. Along with my short film Leave Me Here, I am currently developing another short film and have begun the script for a feature film.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my journey to becoming a filmmaker, there were several roadblocks that I had to circumvent in order to stay on the path towards achieving my vision. After graduating from film school, I decided to go out on my own and produce a short film that I had written in school. Soon after I began production on the film, tragedy would become a part of my life. My mother was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and was in desperate need of a transplant. She fought for a year to stay alive and came close to knocking on death’s door several times. When all hope seemed to be fading away, she received a transplant and miraculously recovered. As my mother was beginning to recover from her illness, my father’s health unfortunately began to rapidly decline, and he passed away unexpectedly. My life had become so chaotic by that point that I had fallen into a deep depression, which had overtaken my existence and my hope that I would ever become a filmmaker. Through all this, I was inspired to write a short story about my relationship with my father and what he would say if he were still alive, which eventually turned into Leave Me Here. I have come a very long way since all of that, and I have set myself back on course to become the artist that I have always strived to be.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
