Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to The Bellwethers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
The Bellwethers, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
How did you learn to do what you do?
Creating music is a lifelong journey filled with exploration, passion, and dedication. Our path to mastering our craft involved a combination of formal education, self-discovery, and endless hours of practice. We started by learning the basics of music theory and honing our technical skills through lessons and classes. However, the true magic happened when we immersed ourselves in a variety of musical genres, and drew inspiration from diverse sources. Collaborating with other musicians and sharing experiences played a crucial role in shaping our unique style. Ultimately, it’s the combination of formal training, personal expression, and an unrelenting love for music that has allowed us to evolve as musicians. The learning never stops, and every note, chord, and melody adds to the tapestry of our musical journey.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
It’s important as a musician to explore a wide range of musical styles and genres from the beginning. Exposure to diverse influences early on can significantly broaden one’s musical palette and provide a more holistic understanding of the art. Additionally, seeking mentorship and guidance from experienced musicians can provide valuable shortcuts. Learning from those who have already walked the path and gaining insights from their experiences can be a game-changer. Lastly, leveraging technology and online resources for learning and collaboration are powerful tools. The digital age offers an abundance of tutorials, forums, and collaborative platforms that can connect musicians globally, facilitating learning and growth. It is also important to remember the learning process is inherently personal and unique to each individual.
What skills do you think were most essential?
In the realm of music, a diverse set of skills contributes to becoming a well-rounded and proficient musician. Firstly, a solid foundation in music theory is essential. Understanding the language of music, including scales, chords, and harmony, provides the necessary framework for creative expression. Technical proficiency on our instrument(s) of choice has been crucial. Whether it’s mastering the intricacies of vocals, guitar, piano, or any other instrument, the ability to translate musical ideas into tangible sounds is fundamental. a keen ear for music is indispensable. Developing a strong sense of pitch, rhythm, and dynamics allows me to interpret and convey emotions through my compositions and performances. This skill is honed through active listening and a deep appreciation for music. Adaptability is another key skill. The music landscape is constantly evolving, and being open to exploring different styles, genres, and even technology is vital for growth. Flexibility in adapting to new techniques and embracing innovation ensures relevance in the dynamic world of music.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
The journey of musical learning is often accompanied by its own set of challenges. One significant obstacle that may be encountered is the limitation of resources, both financial and educational. Access to quality instruments, lessons, and music education programs may be difficult for some, hindering the learning process. Overcoming this obstacle involves seeking alternative learning avenues, such as online tutorials, self-guided learning, and community resources. Self-doubt and perfectionism also can emerge as hurdles. The fear of not measuring up to certain standards or the desire for perfection in every performance sometimes hinders creative exploration. Overcoming this obstacle involves embracing mistakes as part of the learning process and cultivating a mindset focused on growth rather than perfection. Creative blocks and periods of stagnation are additional obstacles. There are times when inspiration may seem elusive, and breaking through creative barriers requires patience and a willingness to explore new musical horizons. Collaborating with other musicians and seeking fresh perspectives plays a crucial role in overcoming these creative challenges. Lastly, external pressures, such as societal expectations or judgments occasionally will pose obstacles to artistic expression. Learning to tune out these external influences and staying true to your artistic vision is essential in navigating these challenges.

The Bellwethers, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Phoenix, like the mythological bird, has seen many bands born and reborn in the desert valley. Our band, The Bellwethers, rose from the ashes of musical acts stretching back to the east coast and all the way West. We are on a journey to quench the musical thirst of our desert hometown and beyond. Combining the dark and light lyrical alchemy of lead singers (and husband and wife writing team) Fran Scianna and KZ Scianna, the alt-rock and blues guitar sorcery of Bill Stimson, and the tribal, soul moving rhythm of Corey Plueard and Dan Scianna, The Bellwethers create a sonic spell book that captivates and entrances audiences small and large. Working with multi GRAMMY-award winning Engineer and Producer, Andrew Coleman on our third studio album, “Psychic Radio” released in September 2023, we journey to the cosmos, rewind time, peer through the looking glass for redemption, and pierce the veil to send a message into the unknown.
Since hitting the Phoenix music scene in 2010, The Bellwethers consistently perform edgy, high-energy, original rock that light up stages across the Southwest. Gigging everywhere from dive bars to marquee venues, our band has opened for international acts like Papa Roach, REO Speedwagon, the Fran Cosmo band (former members of Boston), and Don Felder (former guitarist for The Eagles). We have also been a featured artist at the Arizona Cardinals Pre-Game Show at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ.
An assemblage of music veterans who have been on our individual musical journeys since childhood, our band combines a broad brush of music styles combined with thought-provoking lyrics, layered into soulful beats resulting in an artistic signature that makes us one of the Southwest’s must-see acts. With influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Fleetwood Mac to Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones, we weave our way through multiple genres, belting out powerful performances of original rock underneath the bright desert lights.
Anyone who has seen our band perform is well aware of our incendiary live shows. Think blues, psychedelic, punk and classic 70’s-era rock tossed into a blender and turned on high. Our band continues to expand our horizons, gaining new fans at each performance and generating enthusiastic reviews. We are a community-minded group, and regularly plays benefits for various charity organizations, with a strong commitment to supporting impoverished families, veterans, suicide prevention, and cancer research.
Our music has been featured on radio stations, playlists, and podcasts around the globe. Our original tunes are available on our website (thebellwethersmusic.com), as well as all the major online streaming and retail sites.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a musician is the profound connection forged between our inner thoughts and the external world through artistic expression. Creating music allows us to translate emotions, experiences, and ideas into a universal language that resonates with others. The ability to evoke emotions, tell stories, and communicate through song is incredibly fulfilling. Moreover, the freedom of self-expression is a unique reward. Music provides a limitless canvas for exploration, allowing us to experiment with various genres, sounds, and styles. The opportunity to connect with an audience is profoundly gratifying. Witnessing the impact of our music on people’s lives, whether through shared experiences, moments of reflection, or simply providing joy, creates a sense of purpose and fulfillment. The ability to bring people together through the shared love of music is a powerful and rewarding experience. Collaboration with other creatives is another enriching aspect. Joining forces with fellow musicians, producers, and engineers adds new dimensions to our work. The exchange of ideas, collective energy, and the synergy that emerges from collaboration enhance the creative journey and contribute to the richness of our artistic output.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem is crucial for the cultural and artistic enrichment of society. Here are some key aspects that, in our view, would contribute to creating a supportive environment for artists:
Accessible Education: Ensure access to quality arts education for everyone, regardless of background or economic status. Nurturing creativity from an early age and providing affordable educational resources can empower aspiring artists.
Fair Compensation: Advocate for fair compensation for artists. This includes ensuring fair royalties, equitable pay for performances, and protecting intellectual property rights. Recognizing the value of artistic contributions through just compensation is essential.
Financial Support: Establish funding programs and grants to support emerging artists. Financial stability allows creatives to focus on their craft without being burdened by economic constraints. Encouraging private and public investment in the arts is vital.
Supportive Policies: Advocate for policies that protect the rights of artists, including fair contracts, copyright protection, and measures against art censorship. Clear and supportive policies contribute to a secure and flourishing creative environment.
Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion: Promote diversity and inclusion within the arts. Support initiatives that amplify underrepresented voices, celebrate cultural diversity, and break down barriers to entry for artists from all backgrounds.
Public Art Initiatives: Invest in public art projects and installations that enhance public spaces. Public art not only beautifies communities but also provides opportunities for artists to showcase their work to a broader audience.
Encourage Collaboration Across Sectors: Foster collaboration between the arts and other sectors, such as technology, business, and healthcare. Cross-disciplinary collaborations can lead to innovative projects and solutions, benefiting both artists and society at large.
Cultural Appreciation and Awareness: Promote cultural appreciation and awareness by incorporating arts and creativity into educational curricula. Encouraging an understanding and appreciation of various artistic expressions contributes to a more culturally enriched society.
Community Engagement: Encourage community engagement with the arts. Festivals, exhibitions, and community-based projects create opportunities for direct interaction between artists and the public, fostering a sense of shared cultural identity.
Spaces for Creation and Collaboration: Create and maintain spaces dedicated to artistic creation and collaboration. Studios, rehearsal spaces, and community hubs foster an environment where artists can work, experiment, and interact with each other.
By addressing these aspects, society can play a significant role in cultivating a supportive environment where artists and creatives can thrive, contribute to cultural richness, and inspire future generations.
