We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jazmyn Ervins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jazmyn below.
Jazmyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
How did you learn to do what you do? I went to school for fashion and learned a lot of design and construction skills. Before College, I was always drawing in my sketchbook and sewing occasionally; I had the passion and motivation to want to learn more and perfect my art.
When it came to other skills that weren’t taught in my classes, I searched the internet for resources. I used online tutorials to help further my photoshop skills, learn how to work with latex, practice my Italian, and a lot more.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
I’ve always been a fast learner but sometimes can miss little details. I would tell myself to slow down and review what I had learned, several times, before attempting my “project.” Often, I learn through mistakes that could’ve been avoided had I just been a little more patient.
What skills do you think were most essential?
I think my construction and adobe skills were most essential. My knowledge of photoshop helped set me apart and get me my first major job after graduation.
As for garment construction, I’ve been able to use that as a stepping stone when it comes to working with other media that aren’t your typical fabric, like latex.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
– Not having enough time in the day
It’s hard to carve out time for self-improvement and education with life’s demands and professional commitments. That’s why I’ve really been focusing on time management and consistency.
The cost can also be an obstacle from learning. Depending on the skill, materials can be quite expensive. Also, there are some things that are better learned in person than online, which can be pricey as well.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a fashion designer and owner of J.Dené. Fashion has always been my joy and passion. I studied at three schools for a well-rounded education; Virginia Tech, FITNYC, and FIT’s study abroad program in Milan, Italy.
After school, I worked as a designer for a LA based brand for almost 5 years, then left to start my own company.
My first resort line that has been in the works for over a year is finally coming out soon! I’m so proud and excited to have my designs accessible to more of the world! On the side, I also create one-of-a-kind pieces for a growing list of clients; I love creative projects and working with artists,
I think what set’s my brand apart is its mix of trendy and contemporary design that can be dressed up or down. It’s that piece you buy for a special night out, but then can incorporate it into your wardrobe after, rather than just a one-time-wear. I’m starting in womenswear but have plans of expanding into menswear when the time is right. I hope to grow J.Dené into a brand that is recognized all over the world.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love to see my clients feel confident and excited when they put on J.Dené; that’s the best part. It’s great to see my vision come to life from sketch to on a human figure, but the real reward is seeing how that garment makes that customer feel!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As of right now, the best strategy for growing my clientele has been through networking. Whether it’s participating in fashion shows, selling at flea markets, or just talking to other creatives, I’m able to give more awareness about my brand. Fashion shows this past year have been really beneficial for me. I’ve connected with other amazing designers, models, and photographers through these shows, which has allowed me to increase my clientele.
