We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Asif Akbar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Asif, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned a lot of what I do for a living through practical experience of working on set in different positions. My education was also in film and Television productions as I have graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film and Television Productions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I basically grew up in this industry from a young age as I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up since I was very young around three or four years old. I loved movies and always wanted to be a part in making them. As I matured over my young years, I developed more interest in learning how to tell my stories and bring them to life from writing, to filming them with my friends and our home video cameras for fun when we were kids. As I became a teenager, I started acting in theater and also some small TV projects. I got into behind the camera work in productions in high school, started creating my own content and realized that I wanted to be a director. So I perused my studies after high school at Columbia College Hollywood, who’s is a very hands on film school. I kept making a lot of my own content throughout college and established a lot of great relationships in the industry and proved my worth as a commercial film director that delivered on time, on budget and on schedule for worldwide distribution on feature films.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe it is our responsibility as artists to keep entertaining the people in today’s society worldwide. We have the opportunity to put positive feelings and influences out into the masses and that is a great power in what we are able to do in this industry as creators of content.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s seem to be the future and they are here already. We have to learn to accept and adapt with them moving forward, so better to be educated about them as much as possible asap.
