We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sydnie West a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sydnie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for West-McCoy, being the first plus-size denim brand came about by overhearing plus-size women along with myself complaining about the lack of denim options there were for us. The fit made us look frumpy, we experienced gapping in the waist area, camel toe and a ton of other issues when trying to find the perfect fit jeans. Sydnie K West the founder and designer of West-McCoy could relate because since she was a pre-teen she was plus-size and the options were lacking in what she wanted to wear to blend in and standout with her peers.

Sydnie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Sydnie K West & I’m the owner/designer of West-McCoy, the first plus-size denim brand. West-McCoy launched February 23rd, 2023 as an online clothing brand whose mission is to provide perfect fit jeans to women with curves and a confidence out of this world. The brand came about due to me overhearing voluptuous women in stores and online complain about how hard it has been to find jeans that fit their bodies. They experience gapping in the waist, camel toe/sagging in the crotch area, sagging in the butt area and made their bodies look frumpy. I could relate because I grew-up plus-size majority of my life and denim was the online type of fashion I could find to fit my larger than life body. As, the years went by the options for denim became limited and the options that were available were extremely out of my price range. My most proud moments are when we receive videos and pictures of our “Real McCoy’s” bragging about the fit of our denim. It warms my heart because we’re serving them and giving them confidence.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
West-McCoy’s first year as far as revenue has been less than profitable but we have almost made what we made in 1 year in January alone and the month is not over yet. Finding ways to get the brands products and name out to our customers has been a struggle that we are overcoming. We have implemented influencer marketing and email marketing as a way to get our brand out to potential customers. We know we have amazing denim products that fit, are quality and don’t break the bank. This has provided me with the perseverance to keep going.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually currently pivoting in my business with being strictly the the owner and designer of West-McCoy. By making the decision to step out me being the model/influencer of the brand and making our customers the influencer has started allowing potential customers to see themselves and their bodies in our products.
