We were lucky to catch up with Camille McKenna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Camille thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Mission Heights Chocolates got its name from the neighborhood where my home is located. It all began in our kitchen –The decision to name the business after Mission Heights reflects the sentimental connection we have with our community where we bought our home and raised our children and acknowledges the starting point of our venture. We eventually had to move to our new location on Midway drive in San Diego but the mission remains the same to reach new heights of chocolate craft
Camille , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We started this business initially to have some fun making chocolate . My Husband Dan went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and has worked in many pastry kitchens most notably the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco for many years. I have been heavily involved in the glass arts since college where I was classically trained, so chocolate became the perfect fit. We partnered with Callebaut chocolate as we believe that the Belgian Chocolate Company provides the finest chocolates and just as important ethically sourced chocolates the mission of Callebaut fair trade is to connect disadvantaged producers and consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We take great pride in what we do and because this is our business there is not one aspect that is not monitored by us with love and passion for the work that we do . We know that there are choices when purchasing chocolates and we make it our goal to make ours the best that money can buy.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective and only strategy that we have and will continue to have is quality control. We take responsibility for every single piece of chocolate and take it personally if things are not perfect . We believe that this has been the cornerstone to our success
