Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Coco Roberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Coco, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I thoroughly enjoy being a business owner, because it gives me the freedom to do other things, like volunteer. I have the freedom to schedule clients the way that I would like so that it fits other areas of my life.
I will admit that sometimes when business is slow, I think about getting a regular job lol. But then I remember that I can not just take off and go on a four day weekend whenever I want or take a mental health day without explaining to someone why I need it.
Coco, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in a small town in South Carolina and raised in a single-parent household. My strong work ethic and determination are rooted in my childhood, where I witnessed my mom providing for us in the best way she knew how, often working three jobs. The resilience I developed as a child has stayed with me into adulthood, and I take great pride in it.
My work journey began at the age of 13, working in watermelon fields and picking peaches and cucumbers. Jobs were scarce in the countryside where I grew up. Despite facing challenges, I pursued higher education immediately after high school. However, I became pregnant during my sophomore year, leading me to make the decision to join the U.S. Army to better provide for myself and my son. I am a mother of three, adult boys, and a GG of 5.
After serving four years in the military, I navigated through various odd jobs until 2012 when I wrote my first book. This marked the beginning of my career as a full-time author. Concurrently, I enrolled in college to pursue a career as a therapist. In 2021, I proudly graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health. Following my graduation, I wasted no time and enrolled in a Doctoral program (PSYD) with the goal of becoming a Doctor of Psychology. I am towards the end of my program, I just have to do my final defense.
In May of 2023, I achieved another milestone by opening my own practice, C. Roberts Counseling. Throughout my diverse endeavors, I have remained dedicated to community service, volunteering with several organizations. Each step of my journey has contributed to shaping who I am today, and I am eager to continue making a positive impact in both my professional and community roles.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have had to endure many things in my life, but to highlight the most difficult ones, it would be Death, Depression, Divorce, and Domestic Violence. The death of my mother was very hard and I wanted to quit school, but I could hear her saying, “Lil girl, you have work to do.” It is my hope to open the Peola Roberts Hope House one day.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media, came through being authentic. I did not just share my good days, I shared the bad as well. I now do a therapist look of the day with a twist. I showcase what I’m wearing, while giving a small word of encouragement.
