We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pablo Cunqueiro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Pablo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My first taste of performing came during my stint at a Caribbean hotel. Unlike colleagues who begrudged our nightly musical show (a cruise ship-style spectacle), I relished rehearsals. One evening, while mock-strumming my air guitar beside a playback singer, she flung her arms wide, sending my “instrument” flying across the stage. In that surreal instant, I felt a déjà vu that defied logic. Without missing a beat, I dove after the fallen prop, rolled, and continued playing from the floor – a spontaneous move from somewhere beyond conscious thought.
The second spark struck amidst a visit to my Central American-based family. My sister, working on a presidential campaign, faced a TV program where a panel would grill the candidate. On the afternoon rehearsal, she asked me to stand in for the politician, testing mics and lights. To my surprise, the channel crew, set as the pretend panel, bombarded me with questions. Embracing the absurd, I improvised wildly, spouting whatever my mind conjured. The studio erupted in laughter, and by the time I returned home, acting classes were calling my name.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The constant learning and personal development required of actors can be highly rewarding. Mastering new skills, exploring different techniques, and pushing myself physically and emotionally can lead to immense personal growth. I often find that the journey of embodying diverse characters and navigating the often-uncertain world of the industry shapes me into more resilient, adaptable, and an empathetic individual. The powerful connection forged between actors and audiences is another strong contender for the most rewarding aspect. Whether it’s the roar of applause in a live theater, the emotional resonance on a viewer’s face, or the impact a performance has on someone’s life, actors thrive on the ability to touch hearts and evoke thought through their work.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Facilitating platforms where fans can directly support creators through small, recurring donations helps artists build sustainable income streams. Recognizing the intrinsic value of art, beyond its economic benefits, cultivates a society that respects and celebrates creative expression.
Providing affordable studios, galleries, and performance venues empowers artists to showcase their work and connect with audiences.
