We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jane Zahasky a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jane , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
I show appreciation to all of my massage clients by following up with them after their sessions. Most of the time, it’s the next day and I send them a text asking them how they are feeling. I try to specifically ask them about the issue they came in with the day before that we addressed during their massage. I will also add something personal that they may have shared with me (upcoming vacation, family event, illness in the family, etc).
The key to this client appreciation is consistency. I do it every time. I’m amazed at how many thank me for the follow up. It makes them feel seen, heard and cared for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a small town in Iowa. I danced all through school beginning at age 3. I was a cheerleader in Jr. High and High School. I got a little “lost” in my 20s, graduated from college (Business degree) and became a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. in my early 30s. I moved to NE Iowa, attended Massage Therapy school and got married. I opened up a wellness studio there in 2005 – in a community where most people didn’t even know what a personal trainer was.
Five years later, my husband and I moved to Oklahoma. Four years later we moved back to Iowa, and then moved back to Oklahoma again in 2017. I started leading a women’s ministry and in 2020, I began to offer online wellness programs while I continued to teach fitness classes. I opened my Massage studio in June 2021. After working with a business coach, I hit a big financial goal in just my second full year in business.
I believe my heart for others, my way of showing that I care, and being a natural cheerleader for those that I work with has helped me grow professionally and personally. I love to learn and am always finding ways to help not only myself but others live out their best lives!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is follow up. I follow up with my clients every time they come in for a massage. I am amazed at how many thank me for checking in with them.
Many times, the day after their massage, I share with them (or remind them) how important it is to stay hydrated, what stretch will help them with their issue, or a tip to help manage their stress level.
This is a strategy that gets overlooked way too many times. It takes just minutes each day and it builds relationship. That’s what we are all need in life.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients is client referrals. I have a pricing strategy that even in the service industry (massage therapy), I do not accept tips. I have a sign in my studio that says “the best tip you can give is a referral”. Surprisingly, I do not have a referral discount, it has happened organically and has had a tremendous impact on the growth of my business.
