We recently connected with Kevin Yang and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kevin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Unlike the wedding videographers I’ve encountered, I don’t have a background as an assistant or a film major. In fact, I’m a graphic designer and a fashion photographer with extensive experience. My journey into wedding videography began when I created a video as a gift for a friend. Fortunately, that video led to word-of-mouth referrals, and I started receiving requests for engagement films and wedding films. While I may not have the traditional training from a lead videographer, I’ve seamlessly integrated my background in fashion into my filming style. This marked the beginning of my journey, and it has continued to evolve up to the present day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, everyone! I’m Kevin Yang, a Creative Director based in Los Angeles and the Co-founder of Unveil Creatives, a creative marketing company catering to corporates and higher education. On the side, I also run my own wedding studio called Kea Studios, where I capture couples’ engagement sessions and weddings.
When clients approach me for an engagement session, I’ve noticed that many couples either lack ideas or have very practical ones. To address this, I like to have a meeting with the couple to learn more about them. Are they a fun-loving pair or a bit more serious? Do they enjoy weekends in Echo Park or Silverlake with a good espresso, or are they more of a home Netflix couple? Understanding their personalities is crucial for storyboarding their engagement session.
What I find effective is to have the couple act out their session. I designate scenes based on their interests and ask them to engage in activities they naturally enjoy during dates. For example, in a recent shoot, the bride-to-be mentioned her love for weekend flea markets. Excitedly, I suggested creating a scene there, encouraging them to explore as they normally would while I captured those genuine moments. I thrive on capturing authentic, real moments that reflect the couple’s unique connection.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding as a wedding videographer is when my vision and couple’s vision just came together with an amazing video. Video that I can watch multiple times everyday. When they come to me months later and still tells me that they still watch their video. One time I met a couple I shot for them months ago at a market. We only had about 10sec max to talk but they told me that their friends and family loved it and they still watch videos as a reminder of their day. That really makes me happy. You don’t watch movies you love over and over again right? haha
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of my primary goals as a wedding videographer is to explore and capture moments across the globe. Traveling the world is not just a dream but a mission that drives my passion for storytelling through wedding films. I aspire to document diverse love stories, cultural celebrations, and breathtaking landscapes, creating a visual narrative that transcends borders and connects people through the universal language of love. This pursuit adds an exciting dimension to my work, allowing me to weave a tapestry of unique experiences and emotions from different corners of the world.
