We were lucky to catch up with Erin Owens recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Realizing the scarcity of plant-based options in my area, I started experimenting with baking and meal preps that aligned with my new diet. It wasn’t just about adapting to a new lifestyle; it was about reinventing the flavors I loved.
As I honed my craft, a friend’s fitness studio became my impromptu marketplace. I began selling my plant-based baked goods and meal preps there, and to my delight, they were a hit. The enthusiastic response was both validating and eye-opening. It was more than just food; I was bringing a new, delicious perspective to plant-based eating.
This success was the catalyst for Wicked Whisk. I realized I was onto something special – a unique blend of nostalgia and plant-based goodness. Who knew that reinventing childhood favorites without the usual dairy and eggs could spark such joy and nostalgia? The excitement for these treats was like a flashback to the carefree days of the ’80s and ’90s, minus the animal products. The demand skyrocketed, proving that sometimes, the best ideas come from a blend of personal change and a pinch of nostalgia.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years. After a BRCA1 diagnosis in 2014, I shifted to a plant-based diet and started Wicked Whisk LLC, focusing on nostalgic, plant-based snacks like pop tarts and hot pockets. Wicked Whisk isn’t just about plant-based food; it’s about reinventing childhood favorites with a modern twist.
We sell our food online and provide catering services for events. Whether it’s a drop-off catering for parties or renting out “Zelda,” our vintage food truck, for weddings and corporate lunches, we’ve got it covered. What sets us apart is our unique take on plant-based eating, mixing nostalgia with contemporary flavors. I’m proud of creating a brand that’s more than just food – it’s about offering a memorable experience.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Starting from my home kitchen, after I ventured into the world of plant-based baking, selling them online. This was more than just a business; it was a mission to make plant-based food fun and accessible. Then came 2020, the year we all know too well. Just as I received my LLC and gearing up to launch Wicked Whisk, the world hit the pause button. But like a true “G”, I improvised with contact-free meal deliveries. And guess what? It was a hit! Orders flew in faster than I could say plant-based pop tarts!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Maintaining strong connections with my customers is key to encouraging brand loyalty. My approach is personal and very community-focused, especially at local markets where I’ve built a loyal customer base. I love my interactions with my regulars, especially the ones when we exchange stories about our childhoods and how much they appreciate the way I’ve reinvented their favorite treats, now egg and dairy-free.
I’m a big believer in showing gratitude towards your customers for their continued support. A simple gesture like giving them a little something extra as a thank-you goes a long way in nurturing these relationships. It’s incredibly fulfilling when customers visit local events specifically to see Wicked Whisk, sometimes bringing along a friend. This not only makes me feel so joyful but also reassures me that I’m on the right track. Seeing this small but mighty business grow through word-of-mouth and personal recommendations is a testament to the connection I’ve built with our community.
