We were lucky to catch up with The Makeupology Sarah & Elsie recently and have shared our conversation below.
The Makeupology , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability in the makeup industry, especially for traveling makeup artists (TMAs) is the competition and undercutting of prices. With the rise of social media and DIY makeup tutorials, many people believe they can do their own makeup for special events. Or they are willing to hire less knowledgeable artists at a discount price. This makes it difficult for us to charge what we are worth or make a decent profit.
Picture this… You’re getting married and have a tight budget You are trying to get the most bang for your buck. You do a quick Google search and hire a makeup artist who is willing to do your makeup for $50 and forgo the trial. The TMA not only uses cheap products, but they also don’t properly prepare your skin or apply the makeup correctly. You look in the mirror and hate it. What do you do? You scramble and quickly find another artist who is available last minute and hope they can fix what the previous artist botched. Not only do we have to come in and remove all the makeup and start from scratch, but your skin is now aggravated, possibly extra red creating more color correction and increasing your bill. We can’t put our makeup overtop of the previous makeup because the chemistry may be different and cause skin irritation or your makeup flaking off. This is why researching your makeup artist is so important. Look at their portfolio, have a consultation, go over every detail, and ask all your questions. Researching can avoid disappointment as well as extra costs. The Makeupology team would love to provide you with an enjoyable experience for all your special events. We take pride in our work; we stay up to date with the latest trends and we take our craft seriously. We offer makeup and hairstyles for all special events, and we even have special effects certifications making your Halloween or film makeup look very realistic.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a strong social media presence is something we work on every day. It requires a strategic approach combining consistency, effective promotion, and compelling content. Our social media is in the growing phase so please be sure to follow us on both Instagram and Facebook @makeupology216.
Sarah and Elsie have both organically grown their individual accounts as well. Sarah says it’s much easier to grow a personal page than it is to grow a business page. Some of the tips and tricks we have learned along the way include making sure you have found not only your niche but your target audience as well. Picture the person you are trying to reach. Who are they? What do they do? Describe this person to yourself, then go out and find them. Not everyone is in your target market and that’s okay, cater to those that are. Utilize available platforms, create high-quality visual content, and STAY CONSISTENT. Collaborating is another great way to help grow your social media presence. Last, make sure you are tracking your analytics. This will help show you what is working and what is not. And don’t forget to use hashtags and engage with your audience! Everyone has a problem, so bring them your solution.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building a reputation as a traveling makeup artist involves consistency and hard work. Sarah is known through a few different public avenues. She not only works as a cosmetologist, she has also worked for the public schools and the local hospital.
Elsie is proudly known throughout the community as a bi-lingual Hispanic along with the local hospital as well. She has worked for the hospital for over 12 years now.
Sarah and Elsie continuously work at refining their artistry techniques and love to experiment with new trends and products. Developing a signature style that sets them apart from other hair and makeup artists is something they strive for every day. We attend workshops and masterclasses, volunteer our time and talents, and attend industry events to stay up to date with the latest trends. We have also worked hard at creating a portfolio of both images and videos we can be proud of, and we never stop adding to it.
