We were lucky to catch up with Matt Ryan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
It’s easy to look at the cost of something and forget everything else that’s included in that – For us it’s boat leases, insurance, storage, repairs, payroll for licensed captains and support, and much more. It’s unique in that others like to constantly ask small businesses to discount when that doesn’t happen to larger business that can actually afford to do so.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You can’t please everyone. Sometimes no matter how thorough you are, the customer isn’t always right. We had a situation where we sent the customer a confirmation email, reminder email, and automated text message with directions that they acknowledged seeing and receiving each. They didnt follow any instructions and ended up having to pay fines for illegal parking despite us confirming they parked correctly. Of course, they put the blame on us still, but there’s only so much you can do at times and you can’t please everyone.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We treat every customer with appreciation. Sometimes it’s someone’s first time on a boat and other times it’s their 100th time. No matter who it is and their level of comfort, we tailor the experience to their desires that specific day so they leave with a smile every time.
