We recently connected with Blake Plaster and have shared our conversation below.
Blake, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents raised me to believe that anything in life is possible with hard-work, the right mindset and a vision. They’ve always had a tremendous work ethic and that was instilled in me from the beginning. Upon graduation from college, I knew that I wanted to go into real estate and they were so supportive! They allowed me to live with them when I was getting started and didn’t have much business. I would definitely not be where I am today without them!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in the real estate industry since 2015 and was drawn to it from an early age. I was fortunate to grow up in the Memorial area of Houston, which is known for its spectacular homes and excellent schools! I was always intrigued by the homes that were being remodeled and newly built. My interest grew when my parents decided to move into a larger home while I was in High School and I greatly enjoyed helping them locate it! Upon graduation from college, I knew that I wanted to get into real estate. Fortunately,, I had the right support system behind me, as it is a challenging career in the beginning.
I focus on assisting people with buying, selling and leasing residential property throughout Houston. I am a native Houstonian and take pride in having personal knowledge of the history of the city and its Neighborhoods. I see this profession from the perspective of being a trusted advisor and not a salesperson. After closing, I stay in touch with past clients by updating them with relevant sales information in their neighborhood and always being a referral source for contractors, vendors, or anything else they need to maintain their home.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
2020 was all about resilience! One of my biggest sources of business is connecting with people at open houses and networking events/groups which were all shut down for months. I had to completely re-think my business plan, so I focused on education and discovered some excellent podcasts that gave me new ideas on re-structuring my business moving forward. For one, I learned that I needed to drastically improve my social media presence, so I began creating more content and posting more frequently. I also incorporated video into the properties that I was marketing as it was more difficult to physically tour them.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck
This is a very special book, because I discovered it at a time when I was struggling with business and not feeling very optimistic about the future. I learned that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. For the majority of my career, I had maintained a growth mindset, but after a very difficult stretch, I had become more negative, which impacted all aspects of my life. I soon realized that it was imperative that I regain a positive mindset and re-focus on the things that had led to career progression and life fulfillment. I am in a much better place in my career and life because of this book!
