We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful ZIQI XU. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ZIQI below.
ZIQI, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
In my recent project, I embraced the theme of an alien arriving on Earth with aspirations to become a singer. This narrative is a creative exploration of ambition and adaptation in an unfamiliar world, with a delightful twist. The alien character, while earnestly trying to fit into its new role, reveals an inherent oddness and a sense of humor that naturally emerges from its attempts to assimilate.
The visual style of this project is consistent with my established approach to photography. I focus on creating a vivid, almost surreal atmosphere through the use of vibrant colors and flash photography. This technique is not just specific to this series but is a signature element of my work. It brings each scene to life with a dream-like quality, emphasizing the contrast between the alien’s genuine endeavors and the quirky, vibrant world it finds itself in.
What makes this project particularly meaningful is its underlying message. It’s a playful yet profound reflection on chasing dreams and the often whimsical journey that comes with stepping into unknown territories. This theme, I believe, resonates universally, as it mirrors the experiences of anyone who has ever felt out of place and their endeavors to find where they belong. This project holds a special place in my body of work, as it encapsulates my enduring style while delivering a powerful narrative.

ZIQI, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a photographer, deeply passionate about capturing the profound connections that exist within life in all its forms. My work predominantly revolves around the intricate relationships between humans, animals, and every living entity in nature. I strive to showcase the interconnectedness of all beings, highlighting the universal bond that weaves through humanity, the animal kingdom, and the natural world.
The essence of my photography lies in its ability to tell stories that transcend verbal communication, stories that evoke emotions and provoke thought. I am constantly inspired by the subtle yet significant interactions that often go unnoticed – a glance between a person and their pet, the harmonious coexistence of wildlife with their environment, or the silent, resilient growth of plants in diverse ecosystems. These moments, though fleeting, speak volumes about the delicate balance and the inherent unity in nature.
My focus is not just on the aesthetic aspect of photography but also on its potential to create awareness and inspire change. Through my lens, I aim to bring to light the importance of preserving this delicate balance in nature, fostering a sense of responsibility and reverence towards all forms of life. My artistic journey is a continuous exploration of this theme, seeking to unravel and celebrate the myriad ways in which all life is interconnected and interdependent.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
In my career as a photographer, I have been profoundly influenced by an array of visual and artistic sources. Early on, the film ‘Sakuran’ and the works of Shuji Terayama greatly impacted my visual approach. The vibrant imagery and bold narrative in ‘Sakuran’ introduced me to the power of visual storytelling. Terayama’s fusion of surrealism and avant-garde style challenged my traditional perceptions of photography and film, inspiring me to explore beyond conventional boundaries.
More recently, my creative vision has been significantly shaped by photographers Guy Bourdin and Man Ray. Bourdin’s provocative and sometimes surreal aesthetic has encouraged me to push the limits of traditional photography, blending reality with imaginative elements. Meanwhile, Man Ray’s mastery of experimental techniques has inspired me to embrace innovation and view the artistic process as an arena of endless possibilities.
These artists have not only influenced my style but also my approach to photography as an art form. They have taught me the importance of staying true to my vision, continually evolving, and valuing creativity and innovation in my work. Their influence reminds me that in art, as in any creative endeavor, breaking away from the conventional and thinking outside the box are crucial for creating something truly unique and impactful.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most defining aspects of my journey, both personally and professionally, has been the role of animals in my life, particularly during challenging times. Whenever I’ve encountered obstacles or found myself facing tough situations, I’ve discovered solace and healing in the presence of small animals. Their unspoken language and the sheer simplicity of their existence have a profound calming effect on me. It’s in these quiet moments, surrounded by the gentle nature of these creatures, that I find clarity and regain my strength to persevere.
This deep connection with animals not only offers personal comfort but also significantly influences my work as a photographer. You’ll notice that animals feature prominently in many of my pieces, and this is not by accident. They are not just subjects in my photographs; they are symbols of resilience, teaching me the art of silent endurance and the beauty of uncomplaining existence. Through my lens, I aim to capture not just their physical form but the essence of this quiet strength they embody.
Incorporating animals into my work has been a way for me to express gratitude for the comfort they’ve provided me. It’s also a reminder, both to myself and to those who view my work, of the serenity and resilience found in the natural world. This aspect of my life and work is a testament to the healing power of nature and the unspoken bond between humans and animals.
