Before venturing into my photography business, I held a position that, by conventional standards, was considered great. However, it became INCREASINGLY evident that it wasn’t the right fit for me. The routine of being desk-bound and uninspired left me feeling stagnant, prompting a deep-seated desire to embrace the unknown and pursue what truly lights me up. It’s like the universe reached out it’s hand, urging me to make the leap.
At my core, I identify as a connector, and I recognized that a creative career would bring me closer to personal alignment. This realization propelled me towards my passion for photography, where I discovered profound fulfillment in capturing and witnessing love in all its diverse forms. For me, it’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about serving people by immortalizing their most treasured memories. The joy derived from this process goes beyond a professional endeavor; it’s a genuine passion that fuels my work and allows me to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Tahoe, California, I’ve crafted my career journey as a destination wedding and portrait photographer. Growing up amidst the serene Sierra Nevada Mountains, I’ve always been drawn to the power of social connection and inspired by great adventures.
My grandma, a profound influence in my life, wielded a 35mm film camera with grace. Every milestone, from birthday parties to Christmas, family vacations to school events, was immortalized through her lens. Even now, when I return to my childhood home, I find myself immersed in the nostalgia of countless images captured by her. The turning point came at the age of 10 when I knew I wanted my own camera. I yearned to emulate the energy my grandma infused into preserving those core memories. Little did I know, this early passion would blossom into a lifelong love for photography.
At 15, I embarked on a fashion and design internship with Teen Vogue and O’Neill Surf Company. Working alongside inspiring designers and businesswomen in the vibrant setting of San Francisco, I spearheaded a dress design for the snow and marketed the show back in my small town. This experience not only deepened my understanding of the industry but also ignited my passion for marketing and forging connections to rally support for a cause.
The profound lesson I carried forward was that when you’re genuinely passionate about your endeavors, people are drawn to support that passion. This realization became a guiding force as I entered college. In those formative university years, I found passion in fashion photography, capturing editorial-style images of friends modeling for various brands and boutiques. Building a website to showcase my work, I found encouragement from dedicated professors and receptive colleagues who nurtured my creative spirit. Critique grew to be my most treasured time in my creative courses.
This journey, shaped by familial influences, early aspirations, and enriching experiences, has not only led me to where I am today but has infused every snapshot with a depth of purpose and connection.
And then, I had the opportunity to shoot one wedding—a singular experience that marked the beginning of my journey as a destination photographer. What started as a single event soon blossomed into a passion for crafting emotive and timeless imagery for couples embarking on their next chapter.
Expanding my horizons beyond the scenic landscapes of Tahoe, I now offer my services to couples worldwide. What sets my approach apart is the nostalgia of 35mm photography, capturing candid images that freeze moments “as they are.” Each destination becomes a unique canvas, enriched by different cultures and landscapes.
As I travel, my lens becomes a conduit for emotions, freezing moments that encapsulate the essence of each couple’s story. The allure of destination weddings lies not only in the picturesque settings but in the opportunity to explore diverse cultures and document love in its myriad forms.
Whether capturing the intimate vows exchanged by lakeside in Lake Tahoe or witnessing the grandeur of ceremonies in far-flung destinations, my commitment remains unwavering—to deliver a collection of images that transcend time. Embracing the global canvas has not only broadened my artistic perspective but has also deepened my appreciation for the universal language that is love.
From that initial wedding to my portfolio now, my mission remains rooted in creating visual legacy’s that resonate with the hearts of couples seeking more than just photographs. It’s about encapsulating the spirit of their union in a timeless visual tale that knows no geographical bounds.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
While social media and other forms of marketing have undeniably played a crucial role in promoting my photography business, there’s a unique and powerful force that has consistently proven to be the best source of new clients—word of mouth.
In the digital age, social media serves as a dynamic platform for showcasing my work, connecting with potential clients, and building a global presence. Strategic marketing efforts have allowed me to reach a broader audience and communicate the essence of my photography style. However, amidst the digital noise, it’s the authentic recommendations and testimonials exchanged in personal conversations that have truly propelled my business forward.
Word of mouth operates as a testament to the genuine satisfaction of my clients. When individuals share their positive experiences with others, it creates a ripple effect of trust and credibility. The personal touch of a recommendation carries a weight that transcends the virtual realm, fostering a connection that goes beyond what any marketing strategy can achieve.
It’s heartening to see that in an era dominated by online visibility, the genuine connections formed with clients have become the driving force behind my business growth. Each satisfied client becomes a brand ambassador, contributing to a network of trust that extends far beyond the reach of social media algorithms.
In essence, while I continue to leverage the power of social media and marketing to expand my reach, the organic growth fueled by word of mouth reaffirms the impact of personal connections and the genuine satisfaction of those who have entrusted me to capture their precious moments.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey into launching my photography business has been marked by twists and turns, each contributing to the unique narrative that brought me to where I am today. I initially attempted to kickstart my venture and go full-time while living in the vibrant coastal town of Santa Cruz, California. However, due to a combination of various factors, that particular adventure reached its conclusion. I simply felt like I didn’t have the connections, resources, or capital to know where to start.
Upon returning to the serene mountains of Lake Tahoe, I found myself landing (and settling into) a stable, job. While the position was fulfilling in many aspects, there was a persistent feeling that it wasn’t the ultimate fit for my aspirations. I wasn’t challenged enough to find fulfillment. It was during this period, amidst the routine and comfort of the job, that the idea of pursuing my passion for photography gained renewed vigor.
The stability of the job served as a foundational catalyst. There was a yearning for something more aligned with my true calling. The push to finally take the leap into entrepreneurship came not from dissatisfaction with the job but from a deep realization that my heart longed for the creative and fulfilling path of capturing timeless moments through my lens.
In a sense, the detour into the 9-5 world became a crucial chapter in my story. It provided the clarity and motivation needed to overcome any lingering hesitations. The decision to launch my photography business wasn’t a rejection of the past experiences but a conscious choice to align my present with the passion that had always ignited my spirit. Looking back, the entire experience is a testament to the winding path one takes to find the perfect alignment between passion and vocation.
