We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sunita S.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sunita below.
Sunita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
First of all, I absolutely love this question! It is a perfect way to pay tribute to my parents. Our parents are the very reason for our existence. As we all know, the type of emotional support that a child receives during the first three and a half years influences education, social life, and personal relationships even 20 or 30 years later. Who we are, is essentially shaped up by how we are nurtured. And I have been exceptionally fortunate to have kind, loving, caring and intelligent parents. As I have matured & have a family of my own, I realize how I was set up to face the joys or challenges in life, by that very upbringing.
My childhood was very non-traditional. Parents in India are overprotective, especially when it comes to daughters. (You cannot blame them given the crime rate against women is so high). Sadly, because of this girls do not get to explore the opportunities outside of school or college that helps broaden the perspective. That did not stop my parents from giving me the best childhood a kid can ask for. They always supported me in my endeavors and pushed me to chase my dreams such as heavy engagement into sports or working for social causes.
The strong work ethics, high integrity, importance of discipline, etc. is what I inherited from my dad – a man of admirable character! He worked as project manager (defense contractor) which consisted of dealing with senior naval & military officers. And I got to watch him elicit respect from all his peers/ colleagues alike. That profound moral code of conduct is his legacy that I wish to instill in my children & our future generation to come.
On the other hand, my mom is an extremely talented person, particularly in the arts. Although she does not have a degree from an arts institute, she could easily give any artist a run for their money. She spent most of her free time teaching poor kids who could not afford to pay private tutors to aid them in studies. Or she would encourage people in her community to get involved with yoga, other forms of exercise. Her compassion & selfless acts towards betterment of her community is something I truly cherish. She has taught me to be honest to myself & to others. To mean what you say & to say what you mean!
It would be sufficient to say that I was blessed to have parents who taught me how to distinguish between right and wrong, taught me decent manners, and instilled in me a sense of self-respect.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I guess I’ve been pivoting for a long time, both personally and professionally. I moved to the United States from India many years ago, leaving behind my family and a successful career. That was a big step for me, and like many of my fellow immigrants, it was a risky decision, a gutsy move to make.
Over the years, I have transitioned from one industry to another. I consider myself fortunate, to have gained experience working with diverse sectors and to have developed transferable skills that prove to be a steppingstone in the advancement of my career.

What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
I love this quote by George Lois – “You can be cautious or you can be creative, but there’s no such thing as a cautious creative.” A creative has to be fearless, ready to defy the rules, and tread a path never taken before. I am yet to meet a creative who was not brave enough to attempt something extraordinary.
What motivates me is the thrill of coming up with an amazing idea that infinitely surpasses the vision of even the brightest and most industrious people in the business.
It’s akin to displaying a child’s artwork on the fridge for all to see. Art builds patience, makes you highly observant, boosts your self-esteem, is a terrific stress buster, and best of all, it gives you an indescribable sense of accomplishment.
To those who believe they lack creativity. I tell them – ” Within each of us lies a spark of creativity; you just haven’t explored it yet!”
