We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeta Vidovic, Kathryn Michelle, Izabela Vidovic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeta Vidovic, Kathryn Michelle, Izabela Vidovic, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“Rock and roll is a risk. You risk being ridiculed.” ~ Sing Street, 2016
Like John Carney put it, this applies to any artistic endeavor. Making art for the world to see is always a risk. The challenge is to get to a place where you can hang your art up, leave it on the wall, and understand that, after creation… it no longer belongs to you.
Our next project, for instance, feels risky — being that it is based on a true story. Elizabeta wrote the screenplay, which centers around a story of her mother and brother during the Bosnian War. Anytime you write about real people and real events, especially something as sensitive as a war, it is a huge undertaking to keep it as authentic and truthful as possible. You have a responsibility to tell that story with respect, and to properly recount the events so that everyone feels rightfully represented. This project is titled After Winter, and we’re looking forward to keeping everyone updated once we go into production!

Elizabeta Vidovic, Kathryn Michelle, Izabela Vidovic, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a film production company who both develops all of its own content, and can also help other creatives take their projects from development to the finish line. We write, direct, and produce films that give women a voice, not only on-screen but behind the camera as well. While our stories entertain, we also always deliver a message of strength to women. Our films portray relatable female characters, of all ages and walks of life. Our stories challenge our female characters to overcome obstacles, revealing those badass qualities that often get buried beneath the weight of responsibility.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Kathryn, Elizabeta, and Izabela are unique in the sense that, their lives are so intertwined! The trio is practically family, and when life gets complicated, they step up and help one another out — which means lots of pivoting! When Izabela was busy working as an actress, for example, the team temporarily shelved its feature-length projects and focused on making short films instead. When Kathryn had a baby a few years ago, Elizabeta and Izabela stepped in to take some of the load off while she was on maternity leave. When Elizabeta had to spend most of her time on the road, Kathryn adjusted her schedule to be able to write screenplays remotely with her during her crazy off hours! Working as a team has proven to not only be efficient, but extremely helpful in times when we have little to no control over our circumstances.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For us, making art is about giving back, meaning giving others an opportunity to see themselves in our stories and our characters. It’s very rewarding to hear someone tell you that your film articulated their own thoughts, struggles, desires, etc. Everyone wants to be heard, and it feels good to know that we can play a small part in doing that.
