We were lucky to catch up with Herman “Nile Flame” Woods recently and have shared our conversation below.
Herman “Nile Flame”, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I sold a beat for $100 at 18 and that was enough to know how intellectual property and know my music could actually feed me. Knowing it’s possible is enough for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I picked the drums up at 3. Started learning the black and white ivory keys at 6. Studied violin briefly at 12. To then be raised by a hustler, ambitious and religious mother who’d been singing gospel for 20+ years.
I signed myself and help other artists do the same through unique guerilla marketing tactics and unique perspectives they can’t get anywhere else. Providing every service the artist may need from start to completion of brand identity and a monetization plan. To freely create music I created a fashion house. Majestic Gang Shop. A Natural Luxury Hiphop Shop. First of it’s kind selling frequency elevate merchandise. Like wooden accessories and healthier frequency garments.
My formula of independence is what sets me apart. Ownership + Control = Independence. And I’m very strict on myself about it in every aspect of my life. I’m possibly also the only artist actively separating Rap from HipHop, respecting them as the two different genres that they are.
I’ve been authentic to myself my entire journey and every oz of energy my supporters give I give back 10x over through content or even monetarily by selling shares of albums before they release.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
2022, I left my last job and begin pursuing music and my natural luxury hiphop shop full time. I maxed out my credit cards, lost housing while with my family back to back, and gained fake friends faster than I could lose them, but I continued to pursue because the commitment was made. The way I see it, I had committed to work for others since I was 14. I can give my self that same energy if not more.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To have a community of the most independent supreme beings in the universe. Free from external systems and empowered by ones that align with all their being.
