Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachel DeAngelis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks that I have taken is graduating high school at 16 and moving two states away from home to pursue an education in Journalism and Media Production. Growing up, I was homeschooled, a decision made after enduring severe bullying in middle school. Being homeschooled presented me with countless unique opportunities; I was able to travel for modeling and acting, as well as win several pageants, including a national title at 15 years old. When I decided to go to a traditional university to pursue an education, it was one of the scariest ventures I embarked on because I hadn’t been in an in-person school since middle school. I was very young, living on my own on a college campus. Luckily, I was able to graduate with a degree and overcome my fears by successfully completing my education and heading into the workforce even before I had even completed my final semester of college. One of my messages to someone wanting to accomplish their goals is never to give up and continuously pursue your dreams. Staying strong and having ambition will take you many places in life. As a victim of severe bullying, I want others to know they should never limit themselves based on the effect people can have on them with hurtful words or actions. Always be true to yourself, as that is all you have at the end of the day. “Everyone is unique in their own way; they just have to show it because that is what makes them special.”
Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Rachel DeAngelis, and I am proud to be the evening news anchor for NonStopLocal in Missoula, Montana. As an anchor for the state of Montana, I have been able to cover breaking news, fire alerts, several election races, the ongoing case of Bryan Kohburger, the Chinese Spy Balloon, extreme weather alerts, Missoula Paddleheads, Montana football, and course, sharing some good news with our slogan of #ShareTheGood, along with so much more. At 20 years old, I graduated from Washington State University on several academic scholarships, majoring in Journalism and Media Productions. I have been recognized nationally for my community service, volunteering over 1,000 hours with 50 different organizations. Through competing in pageantry and getting involved in the community, especially working with the National Bullying Prevention Solution Station and BRAVE, I was awarded the 2018 Unity Award from Pacer National Anti-Bullying Organization for the message #cleanthemean partnered with L’Oreal in a commercial that was aired nationwide. In my spare time, I enjoy modeling and acting and have appeared in thousands of publications, including LA Fashion Week, Best Buy, Target, and Macy’s, among others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
For the past eight years, I have been an ambassador for the American Heart Association in honor of my uncle, who passed away at 37 years old from cardiac arrest. I was honored to work with the former governor of California, Jerry Brown, to help pass AB-1719 to make CPR training a high school requirement. As a young woman hoping to heal one heart at a time, I formed a team with my aunt, and we raised over $5,000 for the American Heart Association. I have hosted workshops in my community, including Malibu’s Harry Dombrowski Youth City Commission Health and Wellness Program. With my campaign, Healthy Heart Healthy Life, my mission is to lead by example and teach others the importance of taking care of their health. Family is something that is very important to me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my uncle, who inspired me to create a difference in his world.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
