Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Awesum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Awesum, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Its not so much that I wish I had started my career sooner, I actually wish I had the courage to never stray from what I was passionate about as far as my art career when I was younger. I wish I had more people who were supportive of my choices around me because that would’ve helped with all the doubt I had at such a young age going into a profession that wasn’t as thriving as it is now.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I go by Awesum, and I’m an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. There’s a vast amount of things that I offer creatively but for now, I mainly paint.
I’m most proud of this lifestyle that I’ve created. I’m an artist full time and I know that is a feat in itself but I’m dedicated. I’ve tried so many routes but they never seem to fit the way art has.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew specifically about the Art Students League when I was younger. I feel as if my journey through the arts would’ve been fruitful earlier. When I was graduating high school it would’ve been a much better alternative to college.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Personally, I feel that non-creatives need to know this: before you think that any creative doesn’t play a part in the overall scheme of society there needs to be some humbling done. Everything you see is from a creative person who decided in some capacity that you needed it. And that takes a lot of spiritual and physical energy to do. Give creatives of all kinds their flowers.
