Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Delisha E. Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Delisha E., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy I’m building is for women of all ages to know their worth, know their purpose, and live unapologetically in it. For years I’ve thought about this question because I always try to hope for the best and plan for the worst. The greatest accomplishment to me growing up was being a mom. I know that might seem shocking for my young 40 age but I truly wanted to just grow up and help nurture, lead, and love my own child or children. However, as years started to past and cookie cutter plans turned into crumbs. LOL I thought what is my legacy without a physical child. Immediately still pour into other children, by the way I’m quite a cool auntie! However, what was that to really look like. I begin to pray and discover it was all the same things as before but through different avenues and platforms. There’s a scripture in the Bible (Ref. James 5:19) that instructs a person to go get the one and leave the 99. I pattern my purpose after this. I’m not called to be for every woman or young girl but I will leave the masses to ensure the one in the back corner knows she’s beautiful from the inside out, she matters, and the world needs her awesomeness.
What I hope people will say after I’m gone is that they definitely felt different after being in my presence and motivated to do that next “thing.” I hope to be remembered for loving God above anything and anyone. I pray my life is a reflection of God’s love and that people are inspired to live their lives on purpose.
Delisha E., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m affectionately known as a transformational speaker because after a keynote, workshop, or training audience members have received practical advice they can apply to their life immediately to begin the transformation.
However, let me just say that speaking on stage to large groups of people is not something I ever thought I’d be doing. I’m an introvert at heart, and I thought using my words through books would be enough, but then I realized that when I speak, people listen — and there’s a true need right now for purpose-driven transformation.
So, even though it requires me to leave my comfort zone, I speak.
I get up on that stage and give leaders just like me the strategies they need for understanding what to do next in life and their jobs. Sure, some move on to other careers, but when I speak, retention rates increase, morale improves, and everyone leaves with a strategic plan for the future. Organizations have partnered with me so they can have these same results. As a former Educator and Human Resource Leader, I know firsthand what it’s like to give yourself to your career. From handling students’ needs and parents wishes to navigating new curriculum and requirements from school administrators and how to lead a department for a startup, it can be a lot to take in.
Many professionals devote themselves entirely to their work and in turn, wear themselves out.
As a speaker, author and consultant, I’ve made it my job to step in and offer strategies that help them check in before they check out. With my dynamic speeches and strategies, I reignite the spark for high-potential leaders and professionals to recapture their attention to fulfill purpose.
My work reconnects high-achievers with their driving force and gives them a way forward. Their renewed dedication helps organizations increase retention, improve morale and shape a strategic plan for the future.
Any advice for managing a team?
Managing a team begins with humanizing everyone and empathizing with where they are but knowing they need to be empowered to offer more. People want to know how much you care. I like to use the word lead instead of manage because I don’t think you have to manage people but you do need to lead them. Servant leadership is key to keeping a team of individuals working together and increasing morale. Suggestions I give companies to develop, maintain, and increase morale on the team is through team building exercises, having non-work topic meetings, creating environments for the team to be heard, and ensuring they know they are valued and find a motivation for each of them to come to work. There was a recent study done that found 87% of motivated employees were less likely to resign. Maintaining high morale is directly related to how you make employees feel about working for your company.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My audience is still being built but mainly through authentic connection whether online or in-person. Most people on my social media platforms I’ve either met or spoken to for at least 15 minutes in an effort to make a true connection. I want a person meet to me and once they leave my presence feel like they were seen, heard, and appreciated. A simple smile or complement can truly make someone’s day. If more people made that a daily goal to say something nice to at least one person each day the world would be a better place. We push community but we must first be friendly and the only way to do that is by introducing ourselves and developing a friendship. The only advice would to actually be “social” on social media.
I’d like to add any women that would like to connect with me simply send me a DM and be on the look out for a new community I have launching soon entitled, “Sisters Let’s Connect.” This will be an intimate safe space for women to have very transparent and vulnerable conversations about everything women experience throughout life. The goal is to make authentic connections that will transform our lives.
