Mireille, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Although my office is digital, setting up a business is still quite a bit of work! It started with an idea and a thought exercise: how could I grow as a runner and what would the future of running look like for me? The answer was: coaching. Becoming a coach felt like the right next step for my athletic and professional career.
I became building this career while working at my 9-5. After receiving my first certification, I started to spread the word that I was accepting athletes and thankfully received wonderful responses! I continued working on my coach business alongside my 9-5 for two years before deciding to go full time in 2024.
In these two years, I sought out mentors, scholarships, and a community of other coaches to help make the journey more full-filling. Having the support of other professionals really helped me to build my own foundation. Mentors helped me tackle challenges like time management, system organization, and so much more.
If I could do anything differently, I would just start sooner!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mireille and I’m a certified run coach, autoimmune athlete, and podcast host based in Los Angeles, California
I have been an athlete all my life but I found myself in distance running while in college. As an exercise science major, I was immersed in the world of bio-mechanics, physical performance., and health. However it was also in college where I was diagnosed with Lupus; an autoimmune disorder that left me sidelined from physical activity for 1.5 years. Luckily after treatment, I was able to use running to gain back my health and then some! Over the last nine years, I have experienced so much of what running can bring (determination, fun, discipline, adventure, confidence) and I love working with athletes who are ready to take on their own adventures and discover what lies within them.
I believe a great coach isn’t someone with fast times and podium finishes, though those are great accomplishments.
A great coach is someone who is willing to continue to hone their craft, skillfully guide an athlete through the twists and turns of running, and celebrate the wins and lessons in every season.
I enjoy working with runners who are ready to commit to training & want to level up their endurance game! As a Lupus athlete, I also encourage athletes with autoimmune conditions to inquire about taking their endurance career to the next level post diagnosis.
When I say I coach with a balanced approach to running and life, I mean that! You’ve got plenty of things to attend to and training is all about figuring out the puzzle pieces. Running should fit into and add to your life. In order to do that, I’m proud to say that I help athletes:
*Dream – figure out where you want to go with running (the sky is the limit!)
*Train – using science backed approaches and training philosophies
*Achieve – by empowering, encouraging, and skillfully guiding athletes to the start (and finish) line
I look forward to working with new athletes!
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would choose to become a coach EARLIER, though I know that the paths I took led me here. I still utilize the skills from previous professions to set me apart in the coaching field.
I am still an active athlete and I enjoy helping others find the athlete within them so I would absolutely choose this career again and again.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2023 I took on a part time job. Although I was thrilled at first, over time it became clear that being there was hindering my progress. The longer I was there, the more drained I felt. I knew that in order to give my business a fair shot, I had to leave this place of employment to full-fill my own goals. Though the decision came with plenty of anxiety, I knew that I deserved better.
