We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful CANDICE SETI. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with CANDICE below.
CANDICE, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
When I first moved to San Diego, I was starting grad school in the evenings and got a job managing the front desk at a preschool. I loved the job and I especially loved my boss, Mary. She was incredibly supportive as a mentor but she was not a micro manager at all. She allowed me to explore and learn and grow in the role and just gave feedback as needed or requested. Through her guidance and support, I eventually moved into the school’s assistant director position. She helped me feel so confident and capable and was truly a role model of how I’ve always tried to be as a boss.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
II am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a practice online and in San Diego. To supplement the work I do with my clients, I am also a Certified Nutrition Coach, a Certified Weight Management Specialist, a Certified Expert Life Coach, a Certified Personal Trainer, and a Certified Insomnia Treatment Clinician.
In my practice, I work one-one-one with individuals, helping them understand their maladaptive behaviors and thought patterns, while replacing them with a healthier perspective that allows them to overcome self-sabotage and thrive in the their lives. I also provide services online via video counseling as well as providing numerous do-it-yourself programs addressing weight loss, binge eating, insomnia, and specialty populations like PCOS and menopause.
My primary goal is to help my patients understand their barriers and achieve success– through behavioral lifestyle, and cognitive changes. My previous book, Shatter the Yoyo, provides readers with unique strategies, tips, and tricks on weight management, that can be incorporated into a long-term healthy lifestyle, instead of a short-term regimen that sets you up to regain weight. And my most recent book, The Self-Sabotage Behavior Workbook, helps readers understand their own self-sabotaging tendencies and learn how to overpower it and thrive.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Like most of the people i work with, I had to unlearn EVERYTHING you learn in the dieting world! Calories, cheats, good vs bad foods, you name it. The dieting world is all about restriction and not at all about health or wellness. In embracing my own health and wellness, I had to unlearn all of that “diet” focus and really focus on myself and my own needs, physically and emotionally. It is the pivot that actually took me on this particularly career path and led me to focus on weight management in my career. I knew I was far from the only one that need to change my pespective on dieting and wellness and I wanted to help others open their eyes, break thei dependence on diets, and truly learn how to take care of themselves and meet their own needs.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I’ve always believed respect and involvement are key fo managing a team. Employees want to have a say and want to feel that their opinion is truly considered and respected. we all want to have a say in our lives and our work is a huge part o our lives so it’s immensely valuable to solicit continual feedback from staff and incorporate that feedback as appropriate. i also think flexibility as a manager is so important to morale. We no longer live in a 9-to-5, in the ofice world and managers need to be flexibile with that. As long as the job is getting done, it can have a huge impact on employee moral to be flexible with work schedules, days, hours, locations, etc.
