Matia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I grew tired singing at bars and felt uninspired as a singer. I almost gave up until I discovered spiritual music and rediscovered myself as a devotional singer. I realized I needed purpose to actualize a career in music.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello. My name is Matia Kalli. I am a singer/songwriter. My journey as an artist began at a very young age although I did not formally pursue my singing career until after I graduated from college. I studied jazz and r&b in my early 20’s for fun and discovered myself as a devotional singer on a spiritual pilgrimage that led me to travel around the world sharing prayer. With my background in contemporary music, I have been moved to bridge r&b and devotion in a way that inspires interaction with my audience during live sets. I facilitate singing workshops. I instruct people to sing with full voices and help them access and activate parts of their body that have not received attention. This process is deeply emotional, physical, mental and spiritual. I am here to empower voices and freedom to express. I feel my dharma is to inspire more coherence on this planet through song. Most of my published work thus far has been collaborative. My single ‘Cura Corazón’ became a popular hit in the ecstatic dance scene. My solo career is now beginning to thrive and my debut single ‘Nectar of Devotion’ is scheduled for release on January 11, 2024. I am currently touring with world renowned DJ & music producer Mose. I will be releasing more original music in the coming months–many of which I am producing on my own.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I learned a great deal on pleasure and had to unlearn what discomfort meant in my head and in my body, I feel most of my life I regarded discomfort as the means for personal growth. I believe that there are healthy levels of discomfort that is inevitable when breaking through patterns and learning new things. I also believe that the creative process does not require one’s nervous system to be so completely taxed in the name of improvement. Recently, I have been allowing myself to lean into things that bring deep pleasure into my being, and it’s bringing more juice into my art.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that life is art. I live everyday trusting that I live as I desire and I get to choose that by how much work I put into my craft. I can sustain this life because I choose to and though it is challenging, it is my dharma and feel as though I have no other choice but to keep going.
