We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Baira Chernov a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Baira, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always knew that I wanted to pursue an artistic path since I was a kid. However, I took my first steps in that direction only after getting education, secure job, family. Having a kid prompted me to return into that age together with my son and explore endless possibilities life can provide you, and I was able to recall my childhood passion for creating art.
Baira, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, creative fellows of the world! My name is Baira, and I am a watercolor artist from Swedesboro, NJ. My works are inspired by animals, people and nature. Being a watercolor artist is a never ending journey. I started to copy Disney cartoons creating pencil drawings when I was 7-8 years old, and continued to draw just as a hobby. Today, after getting education and career not related to arts, I finally had some free time to pursue my passion. I opened a watercolor set that my sister gifted me 10 years ago and started to paint birds. It is called a “Birdtober” marathon, all participants have to paint a bird every day of October. It was a great challenge for me and also a great kick start. Since then, I watched a lot of inspiring tutorials and lessons from different watercolor masters. It helps a lot to develop my skills, it is a never ending process, and I enjoy every minute of it. Watercolor paper, brushes, and paints are not cheap, so I set up my Etsy shop to sell my paintings. They vary in price, to accommodate all art lovers. Besides original paintings, there are also art prints like canvas bags (very useful and environmentally friendly) or bookmarks (I am a book lover). I think that fine art and home decor is actual today as never before. Let the art you love live with you in your house, on your wall, or printed on the things you use every day!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There are a lot of enthusiastic watercolor master artists that are willing to support developing artists and help them in their journeys. Some of them even organize marathons with the bunch of great prizes from art supply sponsors in the end. I took part in one of them. During 2 weeks I took part in 5 master classes and finished 10 paintings. I was so happy to engage with watercolor enthusiasts from all over the world. I even received a watercolor set, my first prize ever!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We all can be a part of the artistic world and creative ecosystem! Every one of us can follow their favorite artists on social media, watch them create, and of course try to create something yourself!
