We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kathryn Doner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kathryn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve been a graphic designer by trade for over 15 years now, and about 6 years ago, I decided to pick up a paint brush and explore a new aspect of design – abstract art. I spent countless hours researching other artists that I liked; trying new methods and techniques; exploring every medium; and allowing myself to just create with no expectations other than to learn. Giving myself the space to make many mistakes allowed me to keep going and eventually find my own unique process.
Kathryn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a seasoned graphic designer turned visual artist. My corporate background equipped me with strong skills in composition and design, which I’ve seamlessly integrated into my personal business. Working in the corporate world has instilled in me a solution-oriented approach when collaborating with clients. Whether it’s crafting a commissioned piece for a home or creating a large-scale corporate mural, my focus is always on connecting the dots and solving the client’s unique artistic needs.
Among my most notable achievements is transforming a 2D printed mural into a dynamic digital experience. I undertook a significant project for a global mobile gaming company, designing three expansive murals. The outcome surpassed expectations, featuring a colossal interactive mural showcasing my animation expertise in augmented reality. I incorporated a secret seek-and-find game, aligning seamlessly with the gaming industry, and added physical wall protrusions, allowing users to step into the mural—an all-encompassing and immersive design solution.
Lastly, I’m fortunate to work alongside my incredible husband and business partner, who brings a passion for project management and organization. His invaluable contributions are integral to the success of our business, and I couldn’t be more grateful for our collaborative journey.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling aspect of being an artist and creative is embracing complete vulnerability. This space is profoundly personal, simultaneously humbling and thrilling, as it invites excitement about the unknown and the exploration of uncomfortable spaces. What I find remarkable is the constant renewal of energy inherent in this field; it never gets exhausting. There’s a perpetual opportunity to discover new ways of creating, to embrace failure, to revel in the messiness, and to cultivate meaningful client relationships. It’s a journey filled with laughter, tears, and an immersive feeling through every step of the process. Each experience, although sometimes challenging, is uniquely beautiful and exceptionally rewarding, especially when it culminates in solving a creative problem.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Personal growth and the concept of filling my curious cup. I am so incredibly grateful for the clients I have worked with, and look forward to bringing joy and beauty into my next suite of clients. My goal is to focus on my life-long journey of abstract and digital art.
