We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Linjie Huang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Linjie below.
Hi Linjie, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
In my journey of learning filmmaking, observing and living my life moments to moments are the two most important aspects that advance my skills. Art is all about emotions, and daily observations can inspire me to create resonating moments.
I’ve learned a great deal by observing my life. Whether it’s people-watching in the gas station, strolling through different neighborhoods, or traveling to new places, each experience adds a layer to my understanding of human emotions and stories. These observations are the essence of my craft, transforming everyday encounters into the compelling stories I bring to the screen.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Transitioning from an office worker in skyscrapers to a freelance filmmaker was not easy. The routine of the office vanished, replaced by the uncertainties and fluctuations of a new career. Do I regret it? No. Did I anticipate all these changes before making the switch? No.
In the film industry, I focus on directing and producing, mainly narrative stories and commercials. My journey here began with a desire to escape the routine of office life, and a lifelong love for telling stories visually.
But it’s not just about creating my own stories. I’m really passionate about collaborating with clients to bring their ideas and commercial goals to life on screen. What makes me different from other directors and producers? Well, I’m always asking ‘why’. This comes from my days as a scientist – constantly questioning to design better experiments. In filmmaking, it’s similar. Understanding the ‘why’ behind an idea helps me make sure we’re not just solving a problem, but doing it in a way that truly resonates with what our clients originally envisioned.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Being an Asian filmmaker living in the United States for over a decade, I am motivated to craft authentic stories about immigrants, particularly those with Asian backgrounds. My journey in the States has given me a unique lens through which I view the immigrant narrative, one that transcends the typical portrayal often seen in mainstream media.
As often underrepresented groups, my mission is to create fun stories introducing exciting personalities that are often overseen in mainstream culture. I believe in the power of cinema to bridge cultural gaps and present the diverse experiences that makes the American society today.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, for me, is the powerful ability of cinema to create deep, meaningful connections between people. I have the luck of bringing to life the complex tapestry of human emotions, the intricate details of hardships, and the rich diversity of cultural experiences. These elements, often challenging to articulate in mere words, become clear and resonant on screen.
One of the best moments for me was when an audience approached me after a screening to share their experience. The simple feedback, “I didn’t know, but now I understand”, means so much to me. Connection is simple, and I wish to make stories that bring people together.
