Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Morgan McKell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Morgan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe there are three critical attributes:
First, adaptability is paramount. Success in today’s dynamic business environment requires the flexibility to adjust to changing market trends, evolving customer demands, and the rapid pace of technological innovation. The most successful entrepreneurs are those adept at pivoting their strategies to keep pace with these changes, showcasing both agility and strategic foresight.
Second, a commitment to continuous learning is crucial. The business landscape is in a constant state of flux, which necessitates an unwavering dedication to lifelong learning. This could mean delving into books, Listening to podcasts, or participating in mastermind groups. Staying intellectually curious and informed is essential for staying ahead of the curve and maintaining a competitive edge. Stay Green.
Lastly, (but maybe most importantly) persistence and resilience are vital components of success. The journey of an entrepreneur is often fraught with challenges and setbacks. The distinguishing factor for successful individuals is their ability to withstand these hurdles. They view each failure as a stepping stone to learning and growth, and they do not let difficult times deter their resolve. This relentless pursuit of their objectives, even in the face of adversity, is a hallmark of their success. When things get hard, you cant quit or give up.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So, I’ve been on this wild entrepreneurial ride for the last 15 years, turning some cool ideas into real deals. It all started back in 2011 when we got this idea to start a cell phone repair shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Before I knew it, that little shop turned into a big deal with 14 locations across three states, and in 2018, I sold and exited that adventure.
Next, I found myself asking, ‘What’s the next big thing?’ and landed in the exciting world of digital marketing. I set up my own agency, spread out over Salt Lake City and Pocatello, and teamed up with eight awesome pros. We rocked the digital marketing scene in Utah, offering all sorts of cool services.
I also got to chat about all things digital marketing on The Monarch Social Podcast, and I loved sharing what I knew as a speaker at different events.
Fast forward to April 2023, I decided it was time to pass the torch for Monarch Social, marking the start of a new chapter.
This entrepreneurial journey’s been a rollercoaster, full of highs and lows, but man, did I learn a ton! It’s shaped me into the man I am today – resilient and ready to lead. Now, I’m super stoked about my latest venture, Strategy Zoo, where I get to use all that experience to help other businesses thrive.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
My entrepreneurial journey is marked by the successful founding, and eventual sale of two different businesses,
First, my Cell Phone Repair Company. My first major entrepreneurial venture began in 2011 when I founded a cell phone repair company in Salt Lake City, Utah. This business rapidly expanded, eventually spanning 14 locations.
Although I founded this company, I almost took a proverbial “backseat” to the growth and eventual sale of it in 2018. I had a rockstar as a business partner and regrettably , now, let him run the ship as he wanted. I wish I was more involved than I was. Nonetheless, I learned so much from this adventure. The importance of contracts. The importance of being involved and staying close to the money and cash flow. So many things.
Following the sale of my cell phone repair company, I transitioned into the digital marketing realm. I established a digital marketing agency, which I expanded to two locations – Salt Lake City and Pocatello. Under my leadership, the agency grew to a team of eight professionals, offering over eight key marketing services.
I think this venture further solidified my reputation as a real entrepreneur. I was the one who called the shots. I took everything I knew from selling the first biz, and applied it to this one. In April 2023, I decided to sell Monarch Social, paving the way for new opportunities and ventures.
I think the selling of both these companies show my skills in building, growing, and strategically steering businesses to stages where they are positioned for successful exits.
These experiences have not only contributed to my business acumen but have also shaped my current endeavors, including my role at Strategy Zoo.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Hosting “The Monarch Social Podcast” provided me a platform to share my insights and knowledge about digital marketing. This positioned me as an expert in the field but also allowed me to reach a wider audience. We would cut clips and repost them across a ton of different social media channels.
Basic digital media marketing helped in building a reputation as a thought leader in the industry. I try to be as vocal as I can in Facebook groups and Networking groups/events.
I built a network of connections with other professionals and experts. These connections are invaluable for business growth, collaboration opportunities, and gaining new perspectives. A lot of times, other professionals will post about you “just because”
Most importantly, I tried as best as I could, to deliver results. I prided myself on being valuable to my clients. I took time to understand my customer’s needs and preferences.
In short, I solidified my reputation as a knowledgeable, connected professional, who always delivers in the digital marketing realm.
