We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rozalyn Lucero-Corona. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rozalyn below.
Rozalyn, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy that I’m hoping to build truly is around being an authentic person. I think too many times people, specifically women, are constantly comparing themselves to other women. Whether that be what kind of wife they are, what kind of mom they are, what they look like, their job, what they have, etc. I would truly hope that people would say that I was always “real” meaning I was always who I am. Whether that be making great decisions or making bad decisions. I still was able to show up, face forward, no matter what. I definitely know my faults and have learned the hard way in some situations. But no matter what, my hope would be from my own kids, to the women in the Chingona Community, that they would know that I tried extra hard to do whatever I could to make things happen whether it be for them or the community at large.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I basically got into the nonprofit sector in 2019 and did not realize it. I started a women’s networking group, hoping to network and gain some leads for my staffing career. Fast forward to 2021 and we had exploded. Not only did we experience fast growth and brand recognition, but I at that point realized that our organization was truly a community servant organization. Service to the women within our communities, who are not only looking for leadership, and inspiration, but more than that camaraderie and a safe space to grow with one another.
The services we provide include everything from hosting financial wellness seminars, to hosting meetings centered around networking, and / or highlighting someone else’s business, to community fundraising events, which would include our annual award and scholarship ceremony, our youth day, our canned food drive, and events centered around health and wellness supporting women, mind, body and soul.
I would definitely have to say that I am most proud of building a brand from nothing. I work out daily and many of my friends would call me “Chingona”, without me, really realizing what that meant to me in my day today until now. When I started the Chingona Community, I truly started it with nothing. I had no knowledge on how to set up into a nonprofit how to apply for a 501(c)(3) status, nor would I ever have thought I would’ve taken it to this level. This is something that I’m extremely proud of.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story from my journey that illustrates my resilience truly just transpired about three months ago. I unfortunately was laid off from my position of 14 years. It did not have to do with my individual performance, but losses others, and therefore they cut the higher salary. Old Rozalyn would’ve been extremely upset, new Rozalyn is extremely resilient. Not only did I already start a new business this past June, not realizing I would be utilizing it sooner than later. I realized through this journey and resilience that you can never be too prepared. The unknown can be extremely scary, but at the same token, it can and will open doors that you may not have opened had the situation been different.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my social media audience not only on a budget, but truly through consistency. I have posted every single day since I’ve had my Instagram page set up for the Chingona Community. I’ve done a lot of highlighting of others, along with shared, not only tips, from career advice standpoint, but also health and wellness. I definitely have learned to navigate other people’s pages and tagging along with re-posting to help gain traction, not only for my site for other sites who have relevant and meaningful content.
