We were lucky to catch up with Jay Stylist recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The creative journey is a risk in itself. Growing up, society says, “Go to College”and “Get a good paying job”. That was NEVER the goal for me. My mediate family didn’t really understand the concept of running your own business or being self-employed. It was always perceived as something that took a lot of money or only happened to people who “got lucky”. I was fearful because of that but for some reason it was always something I felt I HAD to do. I couldn’t do anything else, it was for me and I knew that from the beginning. By taking my own path and being fearful but open to the risks that were ahead, I’ve been able to live freely as a creative person even at such an early point in my career. It’s very important to take yourself out of society’s box and make your own decisions even if you’re scared. Take risks, life is only enjoyed once as we know of.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my creative journey with my clothing brand UNBROKEN REVIVE in 2019. I started with an eager mindset, a small 9×12 heat press, cheap vinyl, a Photoshop subscription and a $150 cricut cutter. YouTube is how I learned everything to get started. Others may start with more but for the ones who don’t have a lot to start with can still start from somewhere.
At the moment all the brand provides is fashionable clothing. Down the road I personally see the brand expanding into footwear, jewelry, custom silhouettes and architecture.
The purpose of the brand is to motivate and teach our audience about growth within life obstacles. Being able to normalize then move on from the hurt, pain and disappointment. Turning those problems into purpose. Establishing a growth mindset and understanding that life is all about perception. Your vision and outlook determines your story. Becoming aware that growth is a choice. If you don’t choose it you will stay stagnant but if you do choose it you’ll experience something greater.
What separates UNBROKEN REVIVE from any other brand is of course the design process and the creative releases but to go deeper is the relationship we care to establish with our audience. We aren’t just selling to you. We really care to get to know you and help motivate you on your very own life path. It all starts with understanding that problems give purpose and that growth is a choice. Holding yourself accountable is critical as well.
Throughout this 3 year journey, what I can say I’m most proud of when it comes to UNBROKEN REVIVE is the build up of longevity. UNBROKEN REVIVE is bigger than its owner, bigger than its team. UNBROKEN REVIVE represents a worldwide problem of a group of people who let obstacles define them. UNBROKEN REVIVE is the fashionable cure to creating purpose out of problems. The brand is the story.. The brand was created off of pain and problems. The brand is the purpose.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A “Hard Workers” mentality was my biggest issue. I felt everything had to be work 24/7 instead of fun 24/7… It’s all about perception. I see growth within myself and business now that I look at work as being fun. I get to create for a living. It’s not a job, it’s just doing what I love to do for a living and having fun while doing it. That mentality has made my life better and given me mental freedom, even financial freedom.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
It might look easy but the biggest struggle when creating or running a business is your mindset. Your thoughts can and will control you if you let them. This is more of a life lesson but when it comes to business it is definitely critical. Your mindset can run you out of business, cause you to lose or miss out on relationships and consumers. Your #1 goal should be maintaining a healthy mindset. Everyday isn’t going to be a good day and on those days you’ll really need yourself the most. Get you some positive quotes on the wall in your workspace, have daily quotes come in on your phone/computer, create a relationship with the higher power and/or have a good mentor, friend or coach nearby. Even on a good day, absorb positivity and take a break when you know you need it. Everyday shouldn’t be about business. Don’t forget to enjoy life and learn to find a middle ground and balance with everything you do.
