We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Miyamoto. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Being the youngest of 8 kids comes with a lot of people to look up to and learn from. So the majority of my life lessons were from watching my older siblings, asking them questions or of course learning on my own. As I started my business I realized that being a business owner is in my blood as both of my parents share the same traits. I don’t know if they realized this but they taught us all to be responsible and work hard. We always had a chore to do or something to help with before we could have fun. The most standout story from them teaching us how work ethic was from our daily life. All of us had some part of helping with dinner. Whether it was cooking, setting up the table, getting all of the condiments, or doing the dishes and putting them away. The only way to daily have this complete for 10 people was for us all to help. Now that I own my business we heavily rely on our team to work together to complete tasks quickly. Side note we all began making some of our own income by the time we were 13 or 14 years old. Babysitting, modeling, helping with my dad’s business, working or our brother in laws farm or my older brothers businesses. We all still work well together and do it laughing or at least with a good attitude.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Allison Miyamoto, the creative behind Reveal Hair and Makeup. With a passion for working with people and making them feel comfortable, beautiful and confident when getting their hair and makeup done I have created a team of talented stylists and artists with the same goals and passion. I was surrounded by the beauty industry since I was a teenager as I started modeling at 14. I preferred being behind the scenes rather than behind the camera but those experiences have shaped me into being able to work alongside all creatives in my business. Reveal had its first client in 2015 in Hawaii and we haven’t looked back since. My goal was to simplify the booking of beauty services especially for special events. At the time it was by word of mouth only and clients were still paying by check or cash only. I was hoping to break the barrier and use technology to provide an easier booking, communication, and payment experience. We also offer our services only mobile. So essentially Reveal is like the Uber of hair and makeup. As this was a success I wanted to implement the same experience for our artists working for me. Being in the beauty industry can be very unstable so my passion is to find ways for our stylists and artists to be able to reply on this work and have enough bookings for this to be their only source of income. I am obsessed with growth, adapting and being creative. With that in mind I now have 4 regions Reveal services and have plans to expand to 2 new areas each year.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our main goal is to make the experience very simple for our clients. To keep everything streamlined and efficient so that our clients can feel at ease. The beauty industry often has a reputation of being all about the artist themselves. My goal is to adjust that mind set and that our clients can feel they are being treated to something special and feel pampered and our artists are respected. Making it easier for our artists to focus on their passion of hair or makeup while we provide all of the other aspects of the services.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe that creatives should have an option or a place to learn other aspects of running a business. Often creatives don’t have the knowledge or understanding of all of the other parts that come to play in owning a business. Examples of this are effective marketing, taxes, licenses, other financial aspects and growth.
